Before anyone says "it's a yankee beer"..... you can buy it within the rest of the SEC footprint including here in Destin.

Shiner seasonals are as good as any ..... but Yuengling proper >>> Shiner proper

Sounds like a good thread for an entertainment board style ranking.

I was really convinced that your subject line was a massive typo.

Sounds like a distribution problem. Maybe the company doesn't want to spend the money to push it into Texas?

I've been wondering about this as well. I'm in the DFW area and the closest I can get it is freakin Shreveport. Yuengling is a very good beer! Had it recently at the airport in Philly while waiting on a connecting flight.

Quote:

American's oldest brewery, D.G. Yuengling & Son was founded in 1829 by a German immigrant in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Still operating out of the same building they've been in since 1831, Yuengling is the 4th largest beer distributor in the United States.

I had some a few years ago when I was visiting relatives up north. They made a big deal about it but it didn't really seem that special. Other than the fact that you can't get it everywhere it seemed like pretty average beer.

Yuengling is the best domestic cheap beer. It's one of the only good things about living in the Northeast.

I've been on a factory tour there and they claim they only distribute on the east coast at the moment. They have their main brewery in PA and a subsidiary in FL. They are a small, family owned company so expanding isn't likely an easy option for them. They adhere to an old German tradition that the next family generation to inherit the company has to pay the previous generation for the value of the company. With the company growing exponentially in value the last few decades, the current generation is apparently having a hard time coming up with the money.

ETA: this was info as of a few years back when I last visited. Things could have changed since then.

Its trash and it's funny to watch idiot Texans act like it is special simply because it isnt available here.

I look forward to the inevitable purchase of this by one of the big conglomerates and the subsequent melt down.

The answer to this is the labeling laws in Texas. Yuengling is branded as a lager, but according to The fine folks at the TABC it's an Ale.

From what Dick Yuengling told my brother (yes, this happened) he has the oldest beer label in the US and refuses to change that for some asinine rule the TABC has.

I honestly don't blame him. It will be here eventually and until that day we will just have to go to LA to get it.

And for those of you saying Yuengling sucks, go wax your mustache and pour another oatmeal cookie armpit sweat chocolate sweat sock double IPA

The above is true and also the fact that for a brewery to move into Texas you have to have the ability to drastically increase production just to maintain distribution throughout the state. When you do this it can lead to out of stocks in states closer to your home market and for a brewery like Yuengling who already does the volume they do in other states this is a very real factor. He talks to the owners of the largest wholesalers in Texas on a regular basis and they go up to see him regularly.

I just left one of these wholesalers recently and have had quite a few discussions with people directly involved in the recruitment.

they wouldn't have to label it as an ale because it's not above the min abv that Texas requires you to call an ale, which if I remember is 6%.

Even if so, a completely new label is not required. Just a small blurb 'ale in TX' like the Samuel Adams winter lager.

Your story is riddled with inaccuracies.

It's Obama's favorite beer. That's a good enough reason to keep it out.
