It's a Wonderful Life is a favorite of mine too- a staple around the holidays every year of my lifetime - passed that tradition on to my kids- they complained a year or two and now Christmas isn't the same without that movie.
I believe the movie's copyright expired, or something like that, and that allowed for anyone to market the movie on video, or show it on TV, if I understand copyright law right.
True story - fall of 1988 at A&M, one night the roommates and I were drinking lots of beer, and we were scanning the TV channels for something to watch. We happened upon a black-and-white, obviously old, shot of a couple of galaxies and some little star comes flying in and starts talking. We all gave each other a WHAT-THE-F***-IS-THIS look and kept watching, and despite all the drinking, I really liked what I saw that night. Really good, emotional movie, and it has been in my family's viewing tradition for a very long time.
