Forever Young. Everytime I hear it I think of how all my loved ones are growing older and will eventually be gone.

Elephant by Jason Isbell. Song about cancer, the process of dying, and loss. First time I listed to it I just sat there for 30 seconds and went "what the hell".

Angel Band by The Stanley Brothers. Emmy Lou Harris does a great cover.

Also, Say Hello to Heaven by Temple of The Dog. Even more so now thatChris Cornell has passed.

Other song that hits me hard is Amazing Grace. Ever since the memorial service in Reed Arena after Bonfire collapsed I cannot hear it without tears coming to my eyes
God loves you so much He'll meet you where you are. He also loves you too much to allow to stay where you are.

We sing Hallelujah! The Lamb has overcome!

I was a huge fan of LOTR as a teen, and this track just hits the perfect nostalgia point for me. Absolutely beautiful track, and it takes me back to that time in my life. Plus I always think of Sam telling Frodo "I made a promise, Mr Frodo. A promise. Don't you leave him Samwise Gamgee. And I don't mean to."

Grew up on the farm/ranch listening to this song while out in the barn or on the combine and it always brought me peace. On the morning of 9/11 I was walking to class singing this song as I walked into the graduate lounge and saw the plane hit the tower. This song now makes me want to feed cows and kill arabs.

Besides a few that have already been posted, Broken Window Serenade by Whiskey Myers. I know the song comes from a romantic relationship perspective, but I've dealt with addiction on both sides of my family, and that songs hits me.

Pearl Jam - Just Breathe

When my oldest sister was dying, she was unresponsive for a few days towards the end and the "death rattle" sound of breathing was definitely in the air, it was really the only way we knew she was still alive. The day our other sister spent frantically trying to make it back to see her, there was that mantra in my head "just breathe" because i wanted my other sister to see her before she passed. Weird, morbid, whatever. I just havent heard that song the same since.

I came to post this one. Incredibly moving song.

Quote:

Sit enthroned in white grandeur
But tired and shift
A whisper of wayward silver hair
From your eyes
I'd never seen you unkempt before
As you whisper "Darling close the door"
How have I not made a note of every word
You ever said

And time, is not on our side
But I'll pretend that it's alright
She says the Lord has a plan
But admits it's pretty hard to understand

Before you leave
You must know you are beloved
And before you leave
Remember I was with you

My best friend lost both of his parents to cancer within 5 years. Go Rest High Up On That Mountain by Vince Gill was played at his Dad's funeral so it always hits me hard. When I got the call about his Mom passing away I got in my car and Audioslave's I Am The Highway came on so that's another one that gets me.
As a Dad I can't make it through That's My Job by Conway Twitty without choking up a little.
My favorite beautiful song to listen and reflect on is Explosions in the Sky- Your Hand in Mine

This song. Especially when you know the background. Joey, the beautiful and talented singer of this song, had cancer at the time and has since passed.

It's definitely not mainstream, but I can't hear this song without a getting a lump in my throat. He wrote this song after he went back to Normandy for the first time and saw children playing in the sand.

A lot of the later Beach Boys. I kept hearing that Surfs Up was their best song, but at first it seemed a little too abstract for me when I had it on in the background.

I sat down and listened to it when I got home last week, and while the lyrics are still out there, the music really did something for me.

Kind of a cheat answer but the entire Pet Sounds album start to end without skipping had a similar effect on me.

When I'm Down by Chris Cornell

It's about depression and is even more sad now after his suicide.

My daughter was born two weeks ago.

Yesterday, I was wrestling with my three-year-old son while some country music played in the background when "I Loved Her First" started playing. I'm not going to lie, the waterworks started.

His son's voice doesn't feel natural to me. It feels like he is trying to emulate Willie's tone and style, but it doesn't feel natural. IMO

Its beyond eerie how much he sounds like Willie on that song. I didnt even know that cover existed until like a year ago. Backspacer is such a freaking good album. Amongst the Waves is another good song.

Might not fit the the theme of this thread but I can be in the best mood ever, laughing with friends, having a great time....until I hear "No Rain" by Blind Melon. Then I am just overwhelmed by a crushing sense of depression.

The Avett Brothers- Murder in the City

The last verse gets me. I was listening to it a lot when my sister was nearly murdered and survived.

"Make sure my sister knows I loved her
Make sure my mother knows the same
Always remember, there was nothing worth sharing
Like the love that let us share our name
Always remember, there was nothing worth sharing
Like the love that let us share our name"

My little brother had just finished working on that album as an engineer when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. His career in mixing was just about to take off, so the entire album is difficult for me. But the one that has always left me in tears is "The Only Thing I Need" by 4Him and Jon Anderson. That was his favorite track.

My brother and I received a deep love of music from our parents. My father is a classical pianist, and he still practices daily. I grew up listening to him playing Rachmaninov preludes, Chopin ballades, Liszt etudes, and other pieces well past my bedtime. Fortunately, he's in great health at 83. My mother was a soprano and music teacher, and they performed together often with my dad accompanying on piano. One of her favorite pieces was "Rejoice Greatly, O Daughter of Zion" from Handel's Messiah. She passed in 2012. Listening to the Messiah moves me even more today because of her.

Wow sorry to hear that. The Streams album is absolutely one of my all time favorite Christian albums because of the sound production and feeling of the music.

Isbell knows how to rip your heart out, that's for sure. Elephant was gonna be my vote, but this song also really makes me go, "woah."

In my opinion, this is a lesson in song writing.

Runner-up (he's a piece of sh*t, I know), but "Come Pick Me Up" by Ryan Adams.
