Saw this tonight and loved it! So smart, funny, and just all around great.

I watched this one last night and went in expecting to like it, given Waititi's style of humor. What I didn't expect was the emotional roller coaster this movie was going to take me on. Maybe I missed it, but I had no idea from the trailer that the film would so heavily be about hiding a Jew in the attic. I guess I just thought it'd be more of the summer camp - which did make the whole grenade sequence even more funny to me.

I'll echo some of the things others have said of this already, and shower more praise to this film: the acting was great by everyone involved, the script was great, the jokes were great, and even the quality of the film (costumes, sound, effects, locations) were great.

Two things do standout to me about this film: the opening "heil Hitler" bit between JoJo and Hitler to get JoJo all hyped had this progression that just kept making the bit more funny as it went, and perfectly opened this film.

The other is how poignant it was able to be. It started off strongly funny and irreverent, and without losing that, it managed to also layer in an emotional reflection on Nazism, xenophobia, and the dangers of nationalism. Waitit's themes went beyond just the obvious hate, racism, and simple ignorance towards Jews, by also focusing on the toll that the Nazi state took on Germany and human decency (and the mass's susceptibility to getting swept up in that demagoguery).

I'll watch it again, hopefully many times, when it comes out in home distribution, so through rewatches and time my thoughts may change, but so far that was a masterful film.

Loved it. Wonderful movie, and so many great performances. Taika is hilarious, Thomasin McKenzie is a future star, and I think ScarJo gave an Oscar worthy performance. The main kid and his friend were awesome as well.

Have to give some love to Sam Rockwell though... I thought he stole every scene he was in. Great film.

Does Sam Rockwell ever not do that tho?

He's a national treasure.

I had high expectations and it didn't disappoint. There was a smile on my face for a majority of the movie (though there are heavier moments as expected).

Great movie in general but if you need one for you and the wife/girlfriend to go see, look no further.

What a great movie! Loved it! Did not expect the depth this film brought. Incredibly done and it's rotten tomatoes score is way too low!!!

Just saw it. Loved it. Sam Rockwell was great, and I'm pretty sure Alfie Allen has all of one line, but the two of them together were fantastic. That battle scene uniform.....

The kid playing Jojo was phenomenal. For such a young actor, he delivered a tremendously nuanced performance that captured the awkward, confusing, and emotional transition between childhood and adolescence.

Can not agree more. I went in expecting a comedy about an imaginary Adolf Hitler, but was not ready for the wide range of emotions that it brought out in me while watching the movie. Great movie, superbly cast, and well written. Good job Taika Waititi. He is quickly becoming a favorite director of mine.

Mrs. G Martin and I went this afternoon. I knew what to expect thanks to this thread, but the missus likes going into movies cold, with no prior notions whatsoever. I loved it for all the same reasons mentioned above. Her reaction was mostly puzzlement, as it didn't seem to her like the movie had a consistent tone or balance between the absurd and the tragic. I felt that the movie was occasionally speaking to modern Germans about postwar Germany's long, uncomfortableness with national pride, particularly in the final confrontation between JoJo and Hitler. (The modern dialogue, soundtrack, and dance moves support this, IMO.) Hitler pleads for JoJo to just come back and everything will be the same as before. JoJo's response is uncomplicated and devoid of national handwringing or moralizing. A simple "FU Hitler!" with an emphatic kick out the window is repudiation enough.

Wow! Saw the movie and loved it. I would echo to what the people on this thread said. Didn't expect the depth of the movie. Just thought it was a kid with Hitler as his imaginary friend going to camp.

I liked that it was original and different. A rollercoaster of emotions for sure.

Sam and Alfie chemistry were great together and Sam alone is great as well. Jojo's friend was so funny. Reminded me of the kid from Up. Thomasin was great and the relationship with her and JoJo was sweet.

Scarjo was so sweet and charismatic which made me go gaga over her. I don't know if we can talk spoiler but when JoJo sees his mom broke me. Was not expecting that at all. Another one was JoJo in the war zone.

Roman who played JoJo was great. The whole cast was phenomenal. I think Taika does a great job with the movie in bringing out the different emotions. Will definitely recommend this movie and will tell my family and friends to see it.

Just saw this today. I thought it was fantastic. The humor was good, but the Jojo/Elsa/Rosie relationships completely made the movie for me. It was a much more human story than I thought it would be going in. Highly recommend.

Between this, 1917 and Knives Out, I've had a great long weekend at the theater.

Well this just shot into my top 5 of the year.

If OUATIH or 1917 don't win Best Picture, I'd love to see this win.

This was after a big round applause at the end, which followed a rare in-movie round of applause in the third act.
Which scene?

I hope it's when he says "**** off, Hitler."

No worries, it happens. I fully expect to be in the minority on this point, but the poignant parts were a total miss for me as they felt completely out of place within the world that Taika had established. For most people that'll make them hit even harder, but it just didn't work for me. It probably didn't help that I saw Parasite this past weekend when I was in NorCal, that one was so unexpectedly masterful that I'm still thinking about it. I'll probably start a thread for that one once I finish wrapping my head around it.
Man, this sucks that it didn't work for you. Got emotional in various parts. When he sees his mom's feet and hugs them, I instantly welled up. That was rough.

Interesting, apparently this was a fairly loose adaptation of the source material. (Basically only the first half of the book. Things get even darker, glad the movie didn't go this way.)

Just watched this again. I bought it to watch it, since it's still before it's available for rent, and I'm not regretting it at all.

My previous reaction still stands, and on rewatch it was even more impressive to see all the "tricks" Taika used to enforce the emotions through the film; a few which come to mind: the early focus on the moms shoes, the importance of what clothes JoJo is wearing and how that reflects his confidence in Nazism (whether he has a uniform or casual clothes), the editing and knowing when to add a joke or how to let an emotional moment settle in. A masterclass in film making I'm not sure you'd get if it wasn't the same writer and director.

And, Thomasin McKenzie has got to be the next it actress.
