The Spectacular Now and Eighth Grade are good too! I've heard good things about The Souvenir and American Honey.

- 20th Century Women
- The Florida Project
- First Reformed
- The Farewell

Lots of respect for A24, I'll also recommend

Enemy (directed by Denis Villeneuve)
Slow West (Western with Fassbender and Ben Mendelsohn)
Mississippi Grind (Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn)
The Lobster (Colin Farrell)
The Monster (indie horror flick, takes place almost exclusively in a broken down car)
Good Time (Robert Pattinson is legit in this movie, he has skills)
A Prayer Before Dawn (based on the true story of a guy locked up in Thai prison who kick boxes his way out, stars one of the guys from Peaky Blinders)

I really liked The End of the Tour, but it's heart-wrenching. Jason Segel is great, he should really do more dramatic roles.

A24 is good at putting out movies that are visceral, you feel them as you watch. Green Room is just about the most suspenseful movie I've ever seen, true edge of the seat stuff. Their movies demand your attention, I really like what they do over there.

Bolded mine. Have enjoyed most of those, except didn't think much of Midsommar. Florida Project was depressing as hell.

I keep skipping The Spectacular Now on Netflix. Maybe I'll watch that one next.

Been really wanting to check out mid90s, too.

Disaster Artist was good.

Florida Project was good - except for the final scene, real life snuck video, you can't film at Disney without expensive permits, it was disjointed from the rest of the film

Like several others as well. I keep up with A24 more than anyone else here except TNNCS, who is an executive in the industry.

Opposite, all of Lanthimos is terrible. Not only pretentious, which is fine from a genuine artist, but he's just bad. I might effort-post why when not on mobile, but felt physically compelled to drop that truth here now.

Yes, we do need to use proper language when informing posters and lurkers here about how the industry works. There's a lot of daydreamers here but you actually expanded your horizons with the Southern California move, and so deserve the respect of proper title.

Nobody liked The Lobster? Im not going to tell people to go out of their way to watch it and it takes a certain type but I'm really glad I saw that movie. I still don't fully understand it but it left me thinking about it for quite a while. And sometimes thats all I need from a movie.

Same. So delightfully weird, yet fresh and heartfelt.

In contrast, I watched Midsommar last night. Some real "what the ****" moments. Great shots and really great transitions. The ending wasn't the payoff I had hoped for, but I enjoyed it as a whole.

Looks absolutely incredible to me. Great premise. Serious Adam Sandler. Fantastic trailer.

Can't wait to see it. Comes out 12/13/19.

Ethan hawk is great, no doubt. Reviews are pretty good, but this is one that I just thought, "okay, well this was odd...and completely unsure of the intended message."

Ended up reading a long article that had the director explain the intent and purpose of almost every scene.

I like all sorts of movies...not just a Rambo and Toy Story viewer.

I need y'all to explain The Lobster or link to an article that does, bc I watched it last night and didn't really get what it was trying to say. Definitely didn't think it was bad, per se, but I don't think I would recommend it right now. I wasn't a fan of some of the ambiguity as well.

I enjoy many of these movies. Just finished The Last Black Man in San Francisco, and I have to say it was the most unique, moving show I've seen in some time. I wouldn't be surprised to see it pick up some nominations.

Saw both of these, and I thought both were ok. Enjoyed mid90s a bit more. Spectacular now was hard to figure out what the real point of the movie was until about 30 minutes before it ended.

I saw Death of Dick Long yesterday morning.

It's an extremely well made movie with over the top acting making fun of the South.

Definitely worth a watch, but I thought it could have went further in a lot of places to add to the dark humor.

Honestly, if had to choice only one production company to watch their films, this would be it.

Sooo many of my favorites are theirs.

Just watched 'Hot Summer Nights' yesterday, thanks to this thread, and really enjoyed it.

And I've decided to eliminate my viewing hesitancy based on 'star ratings' -- most of these movies that I've watched and enjoyed, were based solely on instinct. I've found Amazon Prime ratings consistently 1 star below rating of what I would give them, even hesitated to watch some for that reason. But, hardly ever been truly disappointed.

Denzel, Frances, and One of Two Coens Are Making Macbeth for A24

Quote:

Joel Coen will write and direct an adaptation of Macbeth for A24, with Frances McDormand and Denzel Washington in talks to star. In Shakespeare's tragedy which you definitely read and did not just SparkNotes-skim in high school a trio of witches convinces Macbeth that he's destined to be king of Scotland, and he and his ambitious wife scheme and murder for the throne. Variety reports that Washington would play the lord, and McDormand would play his wife.
