Exactly. Good way to put it. I can find Ancient Aliens incredibly fascinating without believing many of the incredible conclusions they jump to. But there can definitely merit to the questions they raise.

As for Oak Island, the new season starts next month and it would obviously be world news by now if they had made some big discovery this summer while filming. I'm not watching for the big reveal. And I don't expect them to find millions of dollars in buried treasure or the Arc of the Covenant or anything like that. While I do believe that something is down there, it's just fun to see them make the little discoveries here and there and then try and piece it all together. That, and I genuinely love that team. It's a good, sincere group of guys with some entertaining personalities, working hard at something they love. I just enjoy being there on that island with those guys for 42 minutes every week. It's as simple as that.

Frankly, I don't know why people have to look down at this stuff from their high horses just because it doesn't deliver "proof." It's just fun to get caught up in the adventure and speculation of it all, knowing in the the back of your mind that 90% of it is most likely bunk. But that 10% of "Ooooh, that's interesting..." is totally worth it.

I mean if you admit you know it's fake and just enjoy the sh*t show factor, then I think it is the same as any number of the mtv or cbs or dating reality shows where the joy comes from laughing at the trash people choosing to involve themselves with the trash show - basically schadenfreude. I could sort of see doing that with the bigfoot and alien type shows because they seem to be in on the joke and dont take themselves very seriously. But with Oak Island, the show seems to take itself seriously and so do the fans.

Right. Because we believe that something is buried there, based on all the evidence; evidence presented both in the show and before the show ever existed; evidence that is sometimes very real and at other times played up for ratings.

Not all of these shows have to be painted with the same, broad, "It's all a bunch of crap" / "You're so gullible" brush. I can believe 90% in Oak Island, believe 10% in Ancient Aliens, and take it or leave it with Bigfoot. It doesn't ALL have to be 100% hoax or 100% real, they're not ALL either 100% pulling our leg or 100% sincere. These shows feature all levels of belief and credibility. These shows feature everything from the highly plausible to the outright ridiculous, sometimes in the same, five-minute stretch. I can invest/believe more in certain talking heads, reports, episodes than others. I pick and choose what I give credence to on a case by case basis, based on the evidence presented, outrageousness, or lack there of.

The more pertinent question is why you find it necessary to come to this thread and play the role of skeptic/finger-pointer, when this thread/show clearly isn't for someone like you.

It's cool that you dont take the show seriously (because if you did you might quit texags in a huff for the 38th time over an e board fight) but my point was that whenever this show comes up on any of the 50+ different texags boards this is exactly how it goes.
I DONT BELIEVE IT IS REAL BUT I GET REALLY DEFENSIVE WHEN PEOPLE CALL IT FAKE

Ah, there it is. Making it personal.

I never said, "I don't believe it's real." I was pretty thorough in my explanation for how I chose to watch these shows and what I chose to believe or not believe in.

Once again, it's not either/or.

I know certain poster have a hard time understanding nuance and context, but again, I don't view these things as black-and-white, real-or-fake. What I believe is that those participating in these shows, for the most part, sincerely believe in what they're doing and the things they're saying. I don't think any of them are out to "trick" us or pass fake things off as real. Oak Island, specifically, is an extremely popular show for the History Channel, and I completely understand the powers that be wanting to milk it for all it's worth, which sometimes means creative editing, drawing things out for too long, eye-rolling cliffhangers, etc. But it's not "fake." There *is* a group of men who are paying a fortune to dig for something they sincerely believe in, based on myriad evidence. They're sincere in their efforts, it's just that sometimes those efforts have to conform to the rhythms and needs of televised entertainment.

That said, I don't give a sh*t if you believe it's fake, nor am I "offended" by your belief. I just find it silly and exhausting that you find it necessary to come to a thread which you clearly have no interest in, sh*t on something many of us like for no other reason than your own satisfaction, and then make it inexplicably personal in the process. It's of course an open discussion, free country, etc, but surely you can understand how lame that is?

Too many people around here have weird ass "schticks" I can't keep up with and don't understand. What kind of loser either pretends to be an assh*le - or straight up is an assh*le - on purpose, on a message board? I'm arguing with him because I assume he's sincere and that there aren't sad psychos going around doing "schticks" on message boards. Guess I should know better by now...

Where did I say people don't have schticks? I said - literally - that there are too many too keep up with and that I don't understand the psychology behind it. Redstone included. It's just creepy and sad to me that people come here to put on a show and "act" out some weirdo/assh*le character. I will never understand it. It's one thing when they're generally funny and harmless like Redstone (though he's gotta have screw or two loose in real life), but people who come here just to be assh*les are about as pathetic as they come.

There's definitely something there. And the only logical conclusion is that it's the Holy Grail, wrapped in the lost manuscripts of Shakespeare, sitting inside the Ark of the Covenant. Could it be??!

ps I love this show

I meant in a general, "giving people the benefit of the doubt" kind of way. You know what I'm getting at.

To be fair I'm not sure expresswrittenconsent being a weirdo assh*le is an act.

It is wrong to get personal on a message board. Let's rise above this and follow the Aggie Code of Honor. TNNCS and I, for example, have had our disagreements but we also have a mutual respect.

This really isn't that hard. Just have fun and post your knowledge, and give an opinion or two. Be nice. I'm also happy to step in if a take needs correcting, but we can do so respectfully and without personal malice.

The show does take itself seriously, which is a positive overall.

North America, including the northern islands, features many nooks and crannies of a very fascinating history.....including a very ancient history, if you are sympathetic to the informed speculations of Graham Hancock in his new book, which I am.

Second, very few posters have been with the show for 6 seasons. Those of us there from the beginning should have more of a say on this thread, because there really is a lot to explore....and the point should be learning through the "destination" of the show, not necessarily having an "AHA" moment.

The show's true fans understand this and appreciate all of the history that's been uncovered thus far. Band-wagoners welcome, but please keep these points in mind.

edit
Let's just enjoy the upcoming season. We can do so respectfully!

B., happy birthday, I hope you have a good one.

We shared a lot of laughs. The sad thing for me is that I've gotten less funny and more annoyed by life in general.
