Saw Silence of the Lambs on a first date back at A&M. We had gone out to dinner and agreed to just see whatever was starting around the time we got there. I remember distinctly thinking during the movie that 'I'm not getting a second date from this girl'. I was right...... Doing that scarred me from going into movies without knowing at least the basics of the plot.

Girl I was dating picked it. Subtitles came on and I was like, well ***** It was/is weird in a good way and I really enjoyed it.

Should have taken her home and given her a little of this number to seal the deal.

A group of us were trying to figure out what movie to see after dinner. I'd heard "The Last King of Scotland" was good, but nothing else about it.

Oops.

I don't know if I've ever had success with this. I think I need to have some kind of expectation or mental framework going in, otherwise I might want the movie to be something different. If I'm in the mood for something deep, and the movie is only kinda-deep, I might be disappointed that it chickened out. And that's not really fair for the movie.

That said... I don't think I really knew anything about Lord of the Rings, other than that the girl I liked was really excited. That, and a friend saying they'd heard uber-nerds complaining about the characters' eye colors being different from the books, etc. So maybe I went in thinking I was in for something incredibly nerdy, and I stumbled into one of the biggest franchises of all time.

And you heard correctly. Although the hacked up wife might not sit well with everyone.

A couple years after graduation I was working in Houston and had gotten to know the guys who ran TheForce.net, and they would occasionally invite me to screenings when they got extra free passes.

One afternoon they emailed and had tickets for a movie that evening, hadn't even heard of it but it was scifi so I said why not. Grabbed a coworker and we headed to the theater after work.

That film was Galaxy Quest, and to this day is still some of the most fun I've had in a theater.

Vanilla Sky with my mom and my wife (we had just gotten engaged).

All I knew was that Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were in it. When Cameron Diaz busted out the famous "you banged me four times in one night and I swallowed your ****" I got up in a panic and almost walked out.

I went in to the original Final Destination movie completely blind to anything about it.

The opening scene with the plane crash killing off everyone only to be a vision of what death was about to come totally through me off.

Was 100% invested in the whole movie after that and still remember being completely shocked at that scene

yes. I always mix those two up, in title at least.

Oh Brother Where Art Thou. Originally went to see another movie, but showed up at a wrong time so ticket dude recommends this one.

The good old days of just going to a theatre and seeing whatever movie started closest to the time you got there, or
Checking the paper for movie times, or calling the theatre to listen to the menu.

In the really old days (long before my time) the 'we saved the MF world" ww2 gen would just show up, walk in and start watching at whatever point in the film it was, then sit through the re-start and leave when it got to "the part where we came in".

Pulp Fiction for me in College. It had not been showing long and there might have been 20 people in the theater (next to Harry's). The three of us laughed out loud when Travolta shot Marvin in the back seat and the rest of the audience was dead silent. That scene might be halfway through the movie and from that point forward I knew I was in for a ride.
