In the past week, I have seen Rigoletto and Cats, and the overtures to both pieces have been stuck in my head. It's odd for an overture to get stuck there, so it got me wondering what are some other great ones?
For Rigoletto, I love how creepy and dark it is. Listening to that, you know you're about to see something amazing and tragic. It gives me chills. Then the fact that the song that comes right after it is a light-hearted party tune... it's a complete 180 and I love it.
For Cats... Look... Cats is never something I thought I would enjoy. I still don't understand it, but it was fun. And that is exactly what the overture is: crazy and all over the place, but fun. It describes the show perfectly, and isn't that what an overture is supposed to do? It makes me smile.
So what are some of your favorite overtures?
