Not a headline I expected to see today. Feels like Logan Roy could be behind this...

I read something about this lab a few weeks ago. If I remember correctly, they are in the process of slowly shutting it down. Sounds like he is about 15 years too late in jumping to action.

"Duchenne muscular dystrophy, sometimes shortened to DMD or just Duchenne, is a rare genetic disease. It primarily affects males, but, in rare cases, can also affect females. Duchenne causes the muscles in the body to become weak and damaged over time, and is eventually fatal."

It's a terrible disease where boys waste away and eventually die when they cant move the muscles required to breathe. There is going to be a gene therapy treatment in the next couple of years that will save thousands of lives. The dog colony at A&M is a big reason why.

I've seen the videos of the kids treated who can run and play baseball and climb the stairs and jump in a pool, when without treatment they would be confined to a wheelchair gasping for breath.

So that guy can eat a dick.

Stephen Crowder (conservative comedian / political commentator) was on campus today from what I hear... when I read the title I figured he was protesting that. So many things for people to get upset about.

Somewhere up there Bush 41 has to be looking on laughing.

The actor who once played a ridiculous caricature of 41 gets arrested and hauled off like a 'pig' on the very campus 41 called home and is now at rest.

I think a debate about the ethical value of using highly functioning animals is a fair one to have. It is also fair to ask whether ethically it's right to breed dogs you know will get the disease. Especially when some are bred to be euthanized at six months old. But like everything else PETA does, they live in an all or nothing world, and it's why their voice doesn't carry further.

If you want a reasonably fair look at both sides of the argument, this article has that.

James Cromwell is the one of the better supporting actors out there. He is featured just enough to be memorable and steal some scenes.

That said, LOL at him for being a dumbass.

If animal testing results in medical breakthroughs that benefit mankind, there is no debate.

It's insane to put animal lives...any animal....above the greater good of humans.

Generally, I agree. But there is still room for debate. "Can this research be accomplished via alternate means?" seems to be one of the more obvious questions.

I think if it could, they wouldn't be using animals. It's not like these are blood thirsty mad scientists looking to torture animals. They're trying to find cures that will help benefit mankind, and often times animals. You simply have to perform real world tests in studying and developing many cures/treatments, so unless you want to use human guinea pigs...which is crazy, all we have is animals for now.

Trust me, it doesn't give anyone the warm fuzzies.

That's not a debate, that's a question with answers.

Q: Can we get the same results by using a different research method that does not require animals?

Yes: Use that method of research.
No: Keep using animals if it's effective.

So do any of you folks know what it takes to do animal research at A&M? I think that is where A&M has failed in all of this. They had a great chance to detail the research approval process, and imho, they left a researcher that they recruited to A&M out to dry. To get to use any higher order animal model, you have to justify that the model chosen can't be replaced and get the same effects as a lower animal model. Also, why do people keep saying we should test in prisoners/humans? What do you think clinical trials are? We do test in humans as well.

If the research isn't carried out here in the U.S. humanely by folks that are indeed for the most part animal lovers, I guarantee you that it will happen somewhere else in a not so humane manner. Hopefully one day we won't need animal models, but until the the FDA says they aren't required, what is the point of the argument? You want no medical advances or care?

A&M could share the IACUC forms for days but peta won't ever listen or consider it... It's a situation where everybody loses.

Yeah, PETA is a lost cause. One can hope it would help enlighten folks like Ryan Tannehill and friends of mine who keep pumping this story and pics of a drooling dog as cruel care on social media.

Unless this particular study is being conducted somewhere else, they're all part of the same facility....LARR...or at least they were in the late 90s when I worked there while going go school. I put in the sprinkler system out at the dog facility. My boss gave me a group of other student workers and told me to go rent some equipment at Home Depot and get it done. Fun summer.
