I watched "Echo in the Canyon", and it was interesting to see the interviews with several legends of rock. Got me thinking who I'd list as the biggest still living (2019) rock legends, in order....

Paul McCartney
Mick Jagger
Keith Richards
Eric Clapton
Robert Plant
Jimmy Page
Steve Tyler
Jerry lee Lewis
Eddie Van Halen
Slash

So many others that could be argued in- The Eagles, U2, Billy Gibbons, Axl, Brian May, Brian Wilson, The Who, Ringo, etc.

Whatever. I limited myself to ten, and they're listed above. Any changes needed?

If you are going to make the list 10 long.... I think Springsteen has to be on it.

He would be the #1 spot, but the list is for still living rock stars. (Unless you're joking about Elvis being alive...)

Dave Grohl definitely needs to be on the list.

Jack white should be just outside the top 10.

Ray Davies has to be on a top 10 list like this.

I really hope you are being Sarcastic.
I talk to him when I am lonesome like; and I am sure he understands. When he looks at me so attentively, and gently licks my hands; then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes, but I never say naught thereat. For the good Lord knows I can buy more clothes, but never a friend like that. ~W. Dayton Wedgefarth

I would put Mick Jagger above Paul McCartney. With the touring and work he puts in, he has eclipsed Paul McCartney.

Roger Waters should be ahead of Slash.

And Ozzy should be somewhere in the 8-12 spot.

Also, not necessarily "rock" but would Bob Dylan qualify?

And for the 80s kids, Eddie Vedder?

I think the one obvious that shouldn't be in the top 10 is Slash. There are many folks already listed on this thread ahead of him. Other than him, a lot of this is arguable.

This list would be tough because some people are going to fixate of the word "rock". Were The Beatles a rock band? Some will say yes, some will say no. Keeping rock pretty open ended, I'll go with

1. Paul McCartney
2. Mick Jagger
3. Keith Richards
4. Robert Plant
5. Jimmy Page
6. Eric Clapton
7. Roger Daltrey
8. Brian Wilson
9. Bono
10. Bruce Springsteen

This is not my personal ranking of who I like, but I don't see how people like Jack White or Dave Grohl could be ahead of any of those.

Looking back at my list, I'm not sure how I left off Eddie Van Halen, so I'll knock Springsteen off

Anybody who doesn't think The Beatles qualify for the debate doesn't deserve any input. That's beyond arrogant parsing, that's just ignorance.

The list posted above is pretty hard to argue with. I'd make one or two changes though....and this is where the parsing is probably a lot more legitimate.....

Take Bono off the list and replace him with Bob Dylan. That's an easy one for me.
I MIGHT argue that Neil Young belongs on that list as well but I'm not sure who I'd bump for him.

Bob Dylan is unlistenable and in no way bumps Bono, but that is just my opinion.

I thought about Dylan, I just don't think he's a rock star. He eventually started doing some rock, but at his height, I just think of him as a folk singer. If he is rock though, he's top 5 for sure. I originally had Neil Young, but I'd probably put him in the 10-15 range.

Slash, Jack White, and Dave Grohl? GTFO with those and I like all of those guys. They can be in the conversation in about 20-30 years depending on who is still alive.

+1 on Dave Grohl.

I didn't realize Jerry Lee Lewis was still alive. I saw him at Billy Bob's in the late 80's, shortly after he had part of his stomach removed.

I think he's the last of the founding fathers of rock and roll, ie Elvis, Buddy Holly, Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, etc. Little Richard is still alive, but he's not a top 10.

Steve Perry is hard to duplicate? The Filipino who is currently singing for Journey sounds just like him. Geoff Tate sounds a lot like him too, just a little deeper.

The Beatles are still the highest selling band by number of units ever.

Interestingly, Garth is number two,

Then:
Elvis
Eagles
Zeppelin
Billy Joel
Michale Jackson
Elton John
Pink Floyd
AC/DC.

The biggest named survivors from that list is probably a good place to start (though Garth isn't rock).

https://www.businessinsider.com/best-selling-music-artists-of-all-time-2016-9#10-acdc-72-million-units-41

For me if you went pure influence:

McCartney
Jaggar
Henley
Waters
Osborne
Bono
Plant
Dylan
Berry
Davies

I excluded groups like The Beach Boys, Madonna, MJ etc. not rock enough for this poll imo.

And....

that's pretty much it. Steve Augeri might be a close third, but he pretty much shot his voice to hell trying to replace Perry.
