I know I can google, but wanted your opinions.

Benny wants to watch horror movies, so I am backing up the helicopter and looking for PG 13 ones instead of saying no.

ALready thought of The Sixth Sense and Poltergeist

Is Hereditary R? If not, that.

The Shining

Crap, both are R.

But if you're willing to let a few f-bombs slide (and a pair of boobs), The Shining is pretty low on violence.

Benny mentioned Happy Death Day.

So I will look for that

Just a comment that may be helpful....if you DVR from network TV, an R movie may be more like PG-13 due to editing by the network, especially if the network is ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX.

I was going to suggest Fright Night. Looks like it was R, but that rating/movie was from 1985. I suspect that had it been released now, it would be PG-13.

Not a true horror film but I highly recommend A Quiet Place.
I believe The Exorcism of Emily Rose was PG-13.
Maybe he would enjoy either version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

A lot of older movies wouldn't be rated R by today's standards. Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, The a Birds, etc.

If going this route, original Halloween is a must.

Thank you for that idea.

It is time to let go of such a tight helicopter circle and let him have some fun.

Too bad the Chucky movies are rated R.

I loved them

For nightmare level of scariness, this would be my suggestion.

You might introduce the classic monsters, maybe with Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman), or preferably a TV edited version of American Werewolf in London or The Howling. There's also some older Dracula movies that give a good back story without being too gory.

How about the TV version of IT and The Stand? I thought both were pretty well done. Also Salem's Lot (the original TV version).

Scream is R, but not really that bad.
More of your typical jump cut horror than your twisted ass **** like Saw.

It has some gory scenes though. Probably most notably the scene with Drew Barrymore in the beginning.

I'd go with the classic Universal monster movies like Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon...

Or go Moster Squad and get all of them rolled up in one kid friendly package. Seriously. Monster Squad is the answer here.

The Skeleton Key

Maybe The Shining TV mini-series in the late 90s with Rebecca De Mornay & Steven Weber.
