I'm cracking up that the very first suggestion for Benny is freaking Hereditary. That movie is beyond ****ed up.

Not to mention it's about an overbearing mother.

The Blob
Them

I'd go with The Lost Boys. I think it may be rated R, but its pretty tame by today's standards. I love that movie.

I dont think the abduction/rape fear of Cloverfield Lane is appropriate at 13. Maybe 15 is the earliest I would consider allowing it for my kid.

I would probably put the same restriction on Split

Yeah, Lost Boys is a Two Coreys movie with boy band vampires.

I think the original 80's scary movies would be okay, even if R -- Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Poltergeist, Carrie, Cujo, Prom Night, Christine.

Those probably won't cause scarring nightmares like The Shining, The Exorcist, Amityville Horror, Prince of Darkness would.

The Gate (1987) is rated PG-13 and scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.

I'm worried the claymation won't translate that well to modern times.

Insidious is a good one; don't recall it being overly gruesome either.

I was pretty surprised to see that one isn't rated R. It's definitely not gruesome, nor are there cans unfortunately, but I do consider it being one of my favorite horror movies - it's very well done and very scary/unsettling, IMO.

Does Benny have sleep problems or any sort of phobia with sleep? I could see that movie freaking him out if he does as the film's plot centers around a boy's "nightmares" (major plot spoiler: which end up being involuntary astral projection which led to him getting sort of possessed by a malevolent spirit )
CNN is an enemy of the state and should be treated as such.

Maybe The Shining TV mini-series in the late 90s with Rebecca De Mornay & Steven Weber.

Are you trying to make him hate the genre?

Yeah... "Not too violent"... She literally saws her own head off with piano wire while we are watching.

Watched it a few days ago... It actually holds up as a pretty decent flick because the child actors aren't *****... And it's funny seeing how Stephen Dorff's face hasn't changed at all in 30+ years.

The claymation is kinda hokey, but you can then show him some of the behind the scenes stuff out there on the internet and maybe spark an interest in special effects.

I am just trying to ease the poor guy into it. I should probably add Tommyknockers to my list. Same quality level.

I like that version of the Shining. It actually tells the story from the book instead of two hours of Kubrick being Kubrick.

Skeleton Key is good too, especially for the ending.

Which would have been great if anyone aside from Rebecca DeMornay could actually act.

They got Wendy right (far better than Kubrick did).... but Weber and whoever played the kid were god-awful.

That's true. That kid was terrible, but it at least showed Jacks slow descent into being controlled by the hotel unlike Nicholson's portrayal. But as a miniseries they also had a lot more room to stretch out

Was going to suggest Idle Hands, but I didn't realize it was rated R. Probably should show it to him anyways just because of Jessica Alba

Word of warning on Gremlins. It spoils Santa Clause if you're kid still believes. Seems unlikely a kid who wants to see Gremlins is still into Santa, but you never know.

I saw the Omen when I was younger as well (maybe around 10?). It was pretty good. Started my odd fascination of tribulation / end times.
