I too have the Audio Technica 120. However, the LP60 is also a great entry level turntable. Can't go wrong with either.
For speakers, make it easy on yourself and just get some self powered bookshelf speakers. I have the Kanto YU2 speakers, and like them, but there are lots of good choices to choose from. Bookshelf speakers are great for a single room. I have mine in my office and they are more than powerful enough for a single room. If you want to rock the whole house, or a large area you may need something larger. If you choose self powered speakers, you won't need to mess around with a receiver, amp, etc...
As someone mentioned earlier, those speakers are Bluetooth compatible, and come with a remote control. I can play the turntable through them, or connect my phone to them and play Spotify.
I highly recommend that you do not get one of the Crosley all-in-one players (or any other brand of all-in-one). They are all very cheaply made, and if he actually enjoys the turntable, he will want to upgrade almost immediately
