I'm not even halfway through but I think Scarlett is amazing in this so far.

Also, "She was addicted to Tums for a while" is one of the funniest lines I've heard this year.

That was fantastic. Reminded me of Revolutionary Road.

Am I the only one that finds Scarlett as hot without makeup as in makeup?

God, that woman....

Y'all all must be too young to remember Kramer vs. Kramer

This movie is not all that original

OP, I agree with your review. I thought the film was good, not great, with the thrust being the actors themselves, rather than the story itself, which is basically a divorce case involving custody, residence of a child, and property division. Whoopdie-doo, something that plays out hundreds of times every day in homes, courthouses, and lawyers' offices all over America

who wants to see a movie about divorce.

sounds boring and depressing.

Not only that, Adam Driver is pretty dull to begin with.

Annnnnnd ........... yes

You predicted correctly

The movie was pretty boring, and just lumbered on at times

I'm sure it's great, and I might even like it if I saw it. But a marriage falling apart is maybe the last topic I would choose to watch a movie about. Such a depressing, uncomfortable subject.

If you watch the movie in reverse then it's a lovely story of two angry people falling in love.

You guys think Charlie lost the New York battle because of the knife trick?
TCTTS

AG
I think he lost the battle because he finally, actively chose to relent. That was his arc. From stubborn to compromising.

That said... ha, yeah, the knife trick certainly didn't help.

The look in Scarlett's face at the end said it all, when he tells her he's taking a residency in LA. As if to say..."You couldn't have done this while we were married?" A mix of anger/resentment, with relief and happiness at the same time.

Yeah, that's a good way to put it.

Btw, this movie is based loosely on writer/director Noah Baumbach's own life and his divorce with Jennifer Jason Leigh, and this makes so much more sense now...

People are so easily starstruck, and I think that's whats behind the rave reviews

The film is about a divorce. In fact, a very run-of-the-mill divorce

Nothing extraordinary or compelling about the story at all. In fact, I waited 2 hours for "something to happen"

Is what it is

Does there have to be? It was enough to keep me interested.

Boyhood was amazing as well. Not one noteworthy thing happens in the entire movie.

Sometimes just a human story is enough when the writing and acting are good enough.

Watched it this weekend. I loved it. Outstanding acting from every lead and supporting. A sad and powerful story.

The big argument near the end is just a masterclass of a scene. Good stuff.

Meh. Whatever. I thought it was pretty disappointing, unoriginal, and ordinary

But to each ....

To each his own, except clearly we only liked it because we're "starstruck." What a weird little jab. Just explain why it didn't work for you.

Yikes. I did not like this at all.

I wanted to see what the rave was about and I saw one take on Twitter about their big fight scene "meh, my parents did it better."

I thought Adam Driver was pretty wooden. I can not imagine that as best actor.

Hollywood is amazing. If Hollywood made something and you find fault with it, there's something wrong with you, not the film.

Also, oh my gosh, look how much this film made! I had nothing to do with it, and it's financial success has no bearing on my life, but oh my gourd!

EXACTLY the point

This movie could be made about 10,000 times every day by simply putting hidden cameras in living rooms, divorce lawyer offices, and courthouses

About as compelling or original as taking the trash to the curb

To me, it was just ordinary

Just finished it and really enjoyed it. Loved Driver in this. Some super uncomfortable moments (when he got served, and of course the time with the child observer). My wife said she'd heard something about the fight scene, and it was tense, but not nearly as bad as people talked it up to be. Definitely saw much worse from my parents during their divorce.
The two faced conversations with each other and the divorce lawyers was pretty damn spot on though.
