With the trailer dropping several days ago and releasing March of next year, figured it deserved its own thread.

This is by far the ONLY Disney remake I've actually been legitimately excited about. Not because Mulan is my favorite Disney cause it's not. Not because of people they've casted in these roles cause that doesn't matter to me either.

But if the tone of the trailers released so far are truly what the final film is going to be, then this is the first actual REMAKE they've done. Practically every other Disney re-tread has been somewhat of a shot for shot re-do of a classic that's already better.

But this? What appears to be a serious war epic with martial arts and a little Crouching Tiger art style mixed in with the story from Mulan? Holy hell take my damn money Mickey cause I'm pumped for this.

No goofy Eddie Murphy comic relief or self aware good luck flying beetle. Just the heart of the story of Mulan with a serious tone.

This looks awesome!

The trailer confused me a bit. So it's not a musical, but the music they chose for the trailer is one of the songs from the original musical?

Same feeling when I first saw the teaser.

This look REALLY good.

Cinderella, Beauty, Little Mermaid, Lion King, Aladdin, were going to bring more scrutiny with the remakes because they were so iconic. But I feel like this one won't have such lofty expectations and has the chance to shine on its own.

If they don't have "I'll Make a Man Out of You" montage in this, I refuse to see it

Sure! Why not?

The movie will still have music and if they can make it fit in this one, having that music would still be great.

Take "Make A Man Out Of You" for example. Say for however they show the training in this film they include snippets of this music in the background but with no words.

But at the beginning it's a much slower rendition as the recruits are performing terribly. Then as the story progresses and they begin performing better the music improves with it until we see what we're expecting: well trained warriors and with that an epic orchestral rendition of the song playing at the same time.

Could be good. Could suck. It's just an idea. But the point being is in the right context they can make music work from the original in this film without it having to be a musical.

If they're going with a shape shifting bird villainess, we better get a kick ass Mushu.

Anyone going to watch this tonight / this weekend or just wait for the Disney + release later this year?

I had planned to watch it tonight only to find out it was an extra $30. No doubt some will pay, but I hope most people hold out. Ridiculous to charge an additional fee on top of monthly subscription. I'll wait til Dec 4

Agree and since pretty much every single "Theater At Home" release has been $19.99 it's BS they are going $10 higher.

I don't plan to pay. I understand the argument it's cheaper than taking my family of 5 to the movies, but $29.99 is nuts. At that price I better own the movie, not just "rent" it.

I'll wait too. but if you have a family of four with young kids it's definitely worth it to pay the stream price vs. going to theatre and buying all the snacks and then the kids crying halfway through and having to leave.

Watching it tomorrow night

Nope

Not paying that amount when I already have Disney.

I can wait

Meh... it looks like they are leaning way too hard into the badass female warrior thing, for me. The original was great because she relied on her cunning more often than not to get past obstacles.

I also agree that it will not be worth watching if "I'll Make a Man Out of You" isn't in it. Though, it's not PC to refer to being a "Man" as good thing in 2020.

I did a quick fast forward through it, and have a question.

I recall from some news story recently that there are some certain types of supernatural elements that the Chinese government frowns upon, so that is why several American scifi/fantasy/adventure movies are either never released or edited for the chinese market.

but one of the main characters in this is obvious of a magical nature.

Anyone familiar with the details on what china allows/disallows re supernatural in movies there?
That seems odd considering how many of their movies have a magical nature to it.

So after we pay $30 how many days do we get to watch it?

You have it for as long as you have Disney+. It doesn't expire. Which is something everyone complaining about the $30 price tag fails to mention - the very people who would likely pay $15 for a movie ticket and then another $15-$25 to own the same movie on digital/Blu-ray.

That's well worth the extra $10.... Especially if you have kids that watch everything over and over and over.

Watched it. Was very good movie! If it was at the theater I'd have seen it and it would've still been cheaper to watch it at home. I prefer this way to theater! Might have to watch it again later just cause I can!!

We're watching it tomorrow. I've never been a huge fan of it, but my 7 year old just saw the original for the first time a few weeks ago, and she's super into it. Considering we haven't set foot in a theater in 6 months when we usually go 1-2 times monthly, $29 is well worth it to me.

It's such a shame that Disney didn't get to release this first to theaters. It is one of the most beautiful and colorful movies I've seen, Disney or not. I'm admittedly a big Mulan fan anyway, but I honestly think it's the best live action remake Disney has released. It was worth the premium price as far as I'm concerned.

I always imagine the pitch of the original movie.

Producer: "And we really want it to be authentic and true to the culture of China. Really celebrate the people and the culture."
Disney Exec: "Awesome, so who's going to sing this big musical number?"
Producer: "Donnie Osmond."

Watched the new one tonight with my family. Really good movie. Excellent message, very cool fighting sequences, a villain living in the grey instead of being pure evil, and how can you fault a movie that celebrates
martial arts legends Donnie Yen and Jet LI by putting them in bad-ass roles that go way beyond martial arts. Both of those guys are 57 this year and both have some incredible moments in the film.

Of the Disney reboots/ remakes, I'd put it ahead of Lion King, Aladdin, and Cinderella and behind only Beauty and the Beast.

How can you not like it? Maybe by Disney doing everything for a $ and ignoring everything that is terrible about China.

Reading that article twice tells me 2 things.
1. The person who wrote it is a moron.
2. They get paid to write controversial things.

But I will let my 8 year old daughters know how how disappointed I am in them for their implicit support of the Hong Kong police.
