Anyone else read this today? They filmed quite a bit of the movie in the same province where the Uighurs are being held in camps. In the film credits, they specifically thank the CCP government agencies who made arrangements for them to work there.

EDIT - I don't intend to start a political debate or argument. I just find it disappointing. I already wasn't going to pay the $30 to get early access to the movie, so this doesn't really impact my purchasing decisions.

Watched the new one tonight with my family. Really good movie. Excellent message, very cool fighting sequences, a villain living in the grey instead of being pure evil, and how can you fault a movie that celebrates
martial arts legends Donnie Yen and Jet LI by putting them in bad-ass roles that go way beyond martial arts. Both of those guys are 57 this year and both have some incredible moments in the film.
How can you not like it? Maybe by Disney doing everything for a $ and ignoring everything that is terrible about China.

Reading that article twice tells me 2 things.
1. The person who wrote it is a moron.
2. They get paid to write controversial things.

But I will let my 8 year old daughters know how how disappointed I am in them for their implicit support of the Hong Kong police.

So you have thoughts on the wapo article too?

Or things like this?

It wasn't good. There was no struggle for the main character. She has superpowers from the start and used those superpowers to win.

The original was so much better because she was a regular girl who used her wits to win.

Jeremy Jahns had a similar assessment.

No. I was foolish to speak up the first time and don't want to discuss politics on the best board on texags.

FYI, filming where they did and then thanking the government agencies that they did is probably 60% as bad as filming a movie near Auschwitz and then thanking the SS for showing the film crew around the countryside. I'm not exaggerating.

Sometimes politics is not separable from whatever you're discussing.

They also had a thanks to the Chinese government agency that is imprisoning the Uighurs in the credits.

So more boycott calls.

agree with this. it was like they couldnt decide what they wanted it to be. was it going to be a beat by beat adaptation of the original? or did they want to broach new, more modern themes? its like they tried to split the difference it just didnt quite connect for me. the movie was fine. it was certainly beautiful to look at and i thought the performances were all solid. but if you are going to make her into this consummate, skilled badass, then you needed to show how this woman felt the need to hide her skills (not just her tits) and who she was before realizing she needed to be who she was. i felt like that message was significantly undersold.
