I recently saw that "The Walking Dead" is getting another spin off and it got me thinking about how "The Walking Dead" is one of those many shows on my to watch list that I never got around to starting. I've seen various threads for the show over the years, so I'm curious if people think it's worth starting the series now. I've seen lots of comments, especially in recent years, about how bad the show gets, so I figured I'd get some opinions before I commit to watching well over 100 episodes.

Also, is "Fear the Walking Dead" worth bothering with? I see the show discussed at times on various blogs/forums and people sure seem to hate the show.

Me too. I was WAY into WD for the first few seasons and made it to the shark jumping point (Season 7). My interest had definitely waned by then. I meant to get back to it but never did.

As for starting now, the first few seasons will definitely get you hooked and are worth a watch.

I only made it two episodes into Fear. They missed a great opportunity to develop the backstory.

I'd say watch them until you decide not to anymore. TWD starts off well. Fear starts okay, then gets better, then doesn't. You don't need to commit to 12 total seasons.

I've seen ~6 seasons of WD and 1 season of Fear. I'd recommend the first 3 seasons of WD, I think. By then you should know if you're totally hooked (keep going until you don't want to), not hooked at all (stop watching) or on the fence (maybe just stop at 3).

I think the WD warts really started to show themselves in season 4. It wasn't instant turn-off territory, by any means, but it started to feel like running in place.

In my opinion:

TWD: Starts great, gets meh, and then sucks.
FTWD: Starts meh, gets good, and now meh again.

FTWD has gotten interesting since they brought Morgan in. The last 2 seasons are worth the watch if you're willing to give it a shot.

It now takes place in Texas and has taken on a bit of a 'western' feel. One of the new characters is a guy who was formerly a gun slinger at Wild West shows and carries a pair of Colt pistols. The new "villains" are a group called The Pioneers who ride around on horseback. I like the direction they're taking it, if for nothing else than the western feel since there aren't many shows like that.

Last season ended on a cliffhanger, so I'll definitely keep tuning in.
