As you of course know, the characters are loosely based on Alcott's life.

I talked about Alcott a bit when I taught the Transcendentalists. She was an interesting woman who came from an interesting family. Her father was a completely impractical idealist who founded an experimental school in Boston that closed quickly when he admitted a black child. He founded a utopian vegetarian community called Fruitlands that nearly did in his family (Louisa wrote a pretty funny satire about it).

Louisa essentially kept the family afloat by writing Little Women and sequels.

The family lived in the same town as Emerson, Thoreau, and (for a time) Hawthorne. Louisa never married, but nursed her parents as they died and then grew very close to Emerson in his old age.

She was at the center of American culture for several decades. Just an amazing story.

Saw this with the family yesterday and every single one of them bawled their eyes out (and I admit I teared up a couple of times as well). Fantastic family/holiday movie, and easily one of the best of the year. Would definitely recommend.

(For context, I've never read the book and hadn't seen any previous film versions before this one.)
