My wife is English so we regularly will start watching bbc crime dramas. There are several we've enjoyed but by far the best is Shetland. Set in the Shetland islands it follows DI Perez, a local boy detective. The Who-dun-its are great and it's absolutely beautiful. And great top notch British casting. As of now it's on Amazon Prime.

We also just finished series 1 of broadchurch. Set in Dorset, another great who done it with Olivia Coleman playing the second lead. Fantastic. Heart wrenching at times. It's on Netflix.

I enjoyed the 1st season of Broadchurch. I kept wanting David Tenet to throw out his "I'm sorry, so sorry" catchphrase from Doctor Who though. The 2nd season wasn't as good, and the US remake sucked.

In American crime dramas, the actors are always beautiful with beautiful clothes and cars, etc. visceral with car chases and stuff blowing up as well as gratuitous sex and violence.

In British crime dramas, the actors look like every day people - bad teeth, unshaven, frumpy, overweight etc.

It's all about the content, script and plot complexities as well as superb acting, innuendo and twists that are timely and involved on many levels.

Gimme that British stuff.

Started Luther recently and it's really solid. I'll also watch Idris Elba in anything.

Sherlock is just one of the best shows ever, though I hesitate to call it a show. More like several sets of great movie trilogies.

Inspector Lewis, Endeavour, Wallander and Foyle's War are my favorites. My brother keeps suggesting I subscribe to BritBox. Apparently theIr collection of English crime dramas is excellent.
Bruce Almighty

Has anyone started the Dracula show that just hit Netflix? It's from the same producers as Sherlock.

My in-laws subscribe to britbox so we have it too since we share a prime account. I think that's actually the only way to get Shetland anymore. Which is a shame because it's the best. It used to be on Netflix.

Sherlock is great. It's really too bad that Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman couldn't get along.

If you're into The Shield or The Wire, I suggest Top Boy. Not as good as those two, but I still recommend it.

Technically French, but there have been several adaptations of Maigret done. They are all very good. I like the Rowan Atkinson and Michael Gambon versions the best.

Subscribed to Acorn TV first, started with Midsomer Murders(over 20 seasons), moved onto Brokenwood mysteries, Vera(my wife's favorite), and finally my current favorite Dalgliesh. She couldn't get all of Vera on Acorn, so got Britbox for her birthday. And yes, love Shetland.

Not all of these are British, but the ones that aren't are similar in their style.

Peaky Blinders is my favorite
Gangs of London
The Fall
Broadchurch
The Head - set in Antarctica
Fortitude - set in Norway, first season is great, didn't care for the second season
Top of the Lake - set in New Zealand
Collateral (only one season, but Carrie Mulligan stars in it)
The Night Manager - places all over the world

Haven't seen Top Boy but it's on my list, heard good things.

Though not British at all I watched Zero Zero Zero this year and really enjoyed it, set in the US, Mexico, Italy, and Africa. I only bring it up because its probably my favorite crime series I watched this year, Gangs of London is a close second, Collateral in third.

Unforgotten

Manhunt - based on true stories ; stars Martin Clunes (Doc Martin)

The Night Manager - Based on John Le Carre novel - Tom Hiddleston ; Olivia Colman

all three have great plots and uniformly great acting.

Got into a phase of watching British crime shows. These were great.
Broadchurch
A Confession
The Bay

Started The Fall but didn't get into it so haven't finished it.
Wild Bill ( Rob Lowe plays Ex US Police Captain brought to small town in Britain to replace their Captain) it's ok, not great
