The hunt for Gollum feels like DIsney making a Star Wars movie about the bounty hunter that Han Solo runs into on Ord Mantell between Yavin and Hoth.
What can possibly happen that is going to make any of the characters look or feel any different when we meet them all in Fellowship of the Ring?
in FOTR, Gandalf and Aragorn talk about hunting Gollum 17 years before the Council of Elrond. Aragorn calls it a "long and hopeless search". Aragorn finds Gollum while Gandalf is off dicking around in Gondor. He takes them to Mirkwood, Gandalf interrogates him, and he escapes.
If they hadn't already done the Ring's progress from Sauron to Isildur to Daegol and Smeagol, I can see this being a more interesting movie, but those scenes are already 20+ years old and well done; the Smeagol murder of Daegol and his subsequent descent into becoming Gollum I still find disturbing and creepy AF to this day.
Then you have the whole Bilbo/Gollum scene in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Trilogy. I really don't see what else there is to explore about it.
