I went looking for this thread to get the reaction of the site to Stephen Colbert leading the way for the next installment in this world. Surprised to see nothing in a while on the thread.

The Critical Drinker is unsurprisingly not a fan.

Great casting. She definitely has the features playing an elf. I'm just not sure about introducing a new character on an already established story. Looks like this movie will be more "The Hobbit" than lotr and that makes me sad.

I'm torn on this one. Some of my favorite LOTR content is the appendices in the ROTK paperback and Unfinished Tales. I know large amounts of the plot in this will be made up fan fiction.

The world building will likely be the only needlemover for a super fan such as myself. Super fan in the sense of textual content of LOTR, not of all the on screen properties.

In all likelihood the world building as a good chance of being bad ass…

Compared to the garbage filler injected into the Star Wars universe, at least this movie is rooted somewhat in canon.

I like the idea of exploring/expanding the lotr universe. I think there are tons of stories that could be told, similar to how Andor did with star wars. I hope it's good.

Sure there's a LOT of tales in this world that can be explored. Enough that we shouldn't be relying on fanfic like this for the movies. A) I'm just not sure the hunt for Gollum is a compelling story, especially compared to all the others available, and B) I'm not sure Serkis is the right guy to do it.

But Anya Taylor-Joy was born to play an elf.

The hunt for Gollum feels like DIsney making a Star Wars movie about the bounty hunter that Han Solo runs into on Ord Mantell between Yavin and Hoth.

What can possibly happen that is going to make any of the characters look or feel any different when we meet them all in Fellowship of the Ring?

in FOTR, Gandalf and Aragorn talk about hunting Gollum 17 years before the Council of Elrond. Aragorn calls it a "long and hopeless search". Aragorn finds Gollum while Gandalf is off dicking around in Gondor. He takes them to Mirkwood, Gandalf interrogates him, and he escapes.

If they hadn't already done the Ring's progress from Sauron to Isildur to Daegol and Smeagol, I can see this being a more interesting movie, but those scenes are already 20+ years old and well done; the Smeagol murder of Daegol and his subsequent descent into becoming Gollum I still find disturbing and creepy AF to this day.

Then you have the whole Bilbo/Gollum scene in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Trilogy. I really don't see what else there is to explore about it.

With any luck Aragorn will be in this movie for 2 minutes at the end and the rest of the time will be ATJ killing orcs
