True Detective season one is my favorite television season of all time. Rust Cohle is one of my favorite television characters of all time. And while this isn't exactly the return of Cohle, it's about the closest thing I could have asked for. Just inject this directly into my veins...

Quote:

Created by Pizzolatto and inspired by Patrick Coleman's debut novel The Churchgoer, Redeemer stars McConaughey as a minister-turned-dissolute security guard whose search for a missing woman in Texas leads him through a corruption-steeped criminal conspiracy, as his past and present impact and entwine around a mystery of escalating violence and deceit.

Beaumont scene from TD S1E4 is a top 10 all time television scene.

Looking forward to this.

Indeed. Just rewatched that episode (and the entire season) the other day. So good.

Oh damn, that synopsis sounds like they are really trying to keep the philosophical Rust Cohle vibe in his character. This could be great.

Also, I'm assuming this probably means no more true detective?

It sounds like no more *Pizzolatto* True Detective, but that HBO is entertaining the idea of continuing the True Detective brand without him. Which, honestly, I think is the best scenario for all parties involved. I think the Pizzolatto True Detective well has run dry regardless. I get the feeling that the brand he created has now become too limiting for him, too repetitive, and that he's out of ideas for it, so to see him be able to tell a similar story, but able break free of the brand's constraints, I think has revitalized him with Redeemer. While HBO bringing in some new blood for True Detective could do wonders for that series as well. I see this is a win-win all around...

HBO has not made a decision about a possible fourth season of True Detective. If the network proceeds with another installment, it is not clear whether it would be with Pizzolatto as I hear HBO brass are open to exploring new creative voices for the franchise.

Is the book a good read? Sounds like an interesting story.

Count me in for the series at any rate.

Haven't read it, but here's the link...

It's worth reiterating that Pizzolatto's take is only "inspired by" (as opposed to "based on"), so I assume he's reworked it quite a bit, added a lot, and really made it his own. For one, the book is set in California, while the series is set in Texas.

If you had left the title out of that description I would have said it sounds exactly like True Detective (just one state over).

I'd definitely still watch it because of my love for season 1 of TD but I'm betting this is going to seem like an imitation all the way.
