I have the old, but I just don't get it.

I work a job where I am in and out of peoples houses and I've seen a ton of posters of K-Pop groups in the rooms of some young kids.

I guess BTS is one of them?

And I've got to ask, WTF???? What about this is popular? Someone please help.

Boy bands.
There were boy bands when you were young. They've been a thing since teenagers were invented as a desirable segment of the population in the 1950s.

The way Korea produces pop stars is creepy.

South Korea studied the best boy and girl bands of the past 20 years and created a concentrated form of it and started mass producing.

Damn Koreans coming over here and taking all of our American boy band jobs. Unemployment rate of teenage boys in Orlando is at an all time high. It's like one of those Midwest factory towns now.

If you are really interested the Netflix series Explained has a episode on K-Pop that talks about its general history and rise to popularity that is really good and its only 20 minutes long.

But long story short there has been a void in the boy band market and K-Pop is filling it. They are this generation's New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys, Nsync, One Direction, etc. The only difference is that while these K-Pop groups are huge in the tween audience they haven't really crossed over to mainstream or pop radio. So you have these groups that could sell out a stadium in minutes yet get no radio airplay. This may just be the way things go for boy bands in the the streaming age.

I'm pretty sure I know the reason for the various hair colors, but I'll keep it to myself.

Go ahead. We're in the trust tree here. I want to know as much as possible. Even if it's Rod Stewart-esque rumors (that one is for the olds)

The Beatles
Cream
Chicago
LedZepplin
The Rolling Stones
The Allman Brothers
Lynard Skynard
Pink Floyd
etc.

What these Kpop artists have that previous boy bands didn't is a massive following on social media. I find their fans on Twitter very annoying but they are very loyal https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/james-corden-bts-army-charity-children-magic-breakfast-thousands-late-late-show-a9307721.html

Here's are some classic k-pop videos from the early 2010s (which includes the video HollywoodBQ posted)
https://www.stereogum.com/983191/the-20-best-k-pop-videos/franchises/list/
(I'm still weirdly entranced by the Bubble Pop song and the strange dubstep-esque bridge)

K-pop is a factory and there's always an issue for the performers having to fulfill their mandatory military obligations (edit to clarify military service requirement is only for Koreans, but there are some many non-Korean performers as well)

My 11-year-old granddaughter is fixated on BTS.

One night I told her BTS stood for "Bavarian Trucking System" and that the band members drove trucks during the day and performed at night. Odd, I said, that Asians wanted to live in Germany and do such hard work and then sing at night, but....

She looked over at her father and he shook his head, "No." I really had her going there for a minute.

If there is something that has become popular and you have no idea what's going on, I have 2 conclusions that are usually helpful:

- You have become old
- Do not invest in it; it's too late, and you will be left holding the bag

One Direction has been around for 10 years now and on break for 4, so i doubt the tweens even know who they are. I think at best these boy bands and tween singers have a 4 year life span. After that the boy band / singer has to either pivot to a adult pop star career or become more and more irrelevant (they may successfully tour for the rest of their lives but will always be known for their hits during that 4 year window).

Korea has boy band / girl group down to an art. These group burn bright and fast and can fit an entire career in that 4 year life span, putting out multiple albums per year and disbanning after 3-4 years. I think we are at peak K-Pop right now and that a new "beiber" of "spice girls" from america could scoop up this market again but I also think K-Pop will likely be here for a long time and there will be a constant flow of new tweens getting in to it going forward.

So you are saying that this is the music that 10-12 year old girls were into when you were growing up? I didn't realize how lame Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd were.

Totally true story.
In the 1980's I was a kid on a family vacation to LA. We stayed at a Sheraton I think it was, somewhere near universal.
Anyway, a rumor started that Menudo was there and thousands of people showed up. They were standing on random cars in the parking lot, it was total chaos.
Well one of the cars got damaged, I still remember it, a black Mercedes, the roof caved where 15 year old Latina girls had been jumping and screaming. Telly Savales lived in the hotel for some strange reason, and it was his car. When we were checking out the next day he was downstairs trying to figure out what to do with the front desk. To his credit I didn't hear screaming or anything, he seemed pretty calm.
Anyway, that's my Telly Savages Menudo story.

TLDR; menudo made Telly's car get hurt.

This was the other one that was really popular at the time. There's like 20 guys in this group.
