We're about half way through and really enjoying this series. Makes me miss Austin even if this is a real issue in East Austin despite great intentions of the Latinos bringing money into that area.

Anyone else watching?

They don't expect you to watch them all!

Last year Netflix produced more shows than all of network television combined.

the endless options of streaming content now is causing people to spend more time in deciding what to watch. I for sure don't have time scrutinize every little thing in the Netflix suggestions. Give me back the days of no more than five solid originals on Netflix.

Also I don't want to invest wasted time on starting up new shows that puts me on an endless cycle of binging, find new show to binge til others come back for a new season, first show is back so binge more... wash/rinse/repeat.

Having a kid for sure decreases the amount of time I have sitting around being a lazy slob so at least that has helped. Except we watch more Disney movies on repeat these days.

Hell, I have a free year of Apple TV that I don't even care about because I don't want another streaming service. Additionally just axed Hulu.

My situation is only one use case but having a metric sh t ton of content available is more of a limitation for me. The algorithms don't seem to target me correctly anymore either.

The majority of the new shows I checkout are based on word of mouth and threads like this.

Thanks for the rec OP.

It's a bad thing when the cost of service jumps a couple bucks every few months.

I watched over the weekend and enjoyed it. I didn't know anything about it going in, but decided to watch after seeing a friend tweet about it. Thought it really found it's groove around episode 7. Definitely worth a shot if you're considering it at all.

The standard Netflix service price has gone up 5 dollars in 9 years.

Netflix used to look like they were going to compete against HBO for quality, now they look like they're trying to keep up with network TV and you have to pay for it. If you enjoy this show all the power to you, but it just doesn't look good based upon the trailer. Most of what they put out doesn't look good. That wasn't always the case. They're going for a quantity model now rather than quality.

They're aiming at CW now rather than HBO.

haha what? when was this a thing?

The only thing netflix has done (and continues to do) is expand it's library by whatever means necessary. They have never shown an ounce of restraint in terms of what properties they purchase. And to a greater extent, they hardly EVER promote any of their shows (something HBO always always does).

Their "quality" content is the exception and always has been.

I would disagree. It seems to me like they still go for quality, but they are looking to appeal to more than one kind of viewer. I agree that a lot of the shows don't look interesting to me, but clearly people are interested.

HBOs about to churn out like 10x more content than ever before. It would seem that HBO wants to be like Netflix more than Netflix wants to be like HBO, but that both see great value in owning and producing large libraries of content.

Netflix has made a few comments in the past that they want to have everyone's favorite show. You don't do that by being HBO, you do it by putting out a wide range of content that appeals to lots of different people.

Their "quality" content is the exception and always has been.
In 2015 their release lineup looked like this:
Sense8 Season 1
House of Cards Season 3
Orange is the New Black Season 3
Daredevil Season 1
Bloodline Season 1
Narcos Season 1
Jessica Jones Season 1
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 1
Grace and Frankie Season 1
Master of None Season 1
F is for Family Season 1
Bo Jack Horseman Season 2
Chefs Table Season 1
Making a Murderer Season 1
W/ Bob and David
Wet Hot American Summer
Hemlock Grove Season 3
Marco Polo Season 1
Lillyhammer Season 3

That's almost everything save for some kids stuff that I'm not going to judge quality on. I don't even like all of those shows, or even most of them, but it made Netflix seem like they were at least reaching for being a competitor to HBO as far as quality, even if they were going to fall short. It at the very least felt like going to Blockbuster and looking at the New Releases wall rather than going to Walmart a digging through a bargain bin.

Yea and how many of those season 1 launches could you see airing on HBO? Narcos, Bloodline, and...?

Netflix has quality content, but they've always been focused on quantity.

Either way, it doesn't bother me to have options.

Shows on that list that were nominated for an Emmy:
House of Cards
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Master of None
Bloodline
Orange is the New Black
Grace and Frankie
Bo Jack Horseman
F is for Family
Chef's Table
Making a Murderer

Then you have Narcos with a Golden Globe nomination.

That leaves you with the Marvel stuff that a lot of people enjoyed, Sense8, Lillyhammer, Marco Polo and Hemlock Grove. That's a way better hit rate than they currently have. They used to bolster their catalog by buying streaming rights, now as the other guys are starting their own they're just churning.

Anyway, I'm done with the derail. I wasn't saying Netflix was HBO, just that they were trending that way, now they're running full speed ahead away from that.

While I get what you're saying, you're glamorizing HBO's overall lineup a bit. They've got a whole lot of shows that aren't GoT/Westworld.

lol HBO received' 137 emmy nominations in the past year ALONE.

Also, nice job cherry picking 2015 and lumping existing IP with newly created IP and acting as if that's the normal flow of programming that Netflix puts out.

Here's the reality; every year Netflix releases some great stuff. The majority of their content is not. That has always been the case. You're just cherry picking the good ones and forgetting all the rest.

Lol i honestly think GoT and Westworld are the worst examples of HBO's quality (Chernobyl was the best thing i watched on TV last year).

I'm not saying EVERY hbo show is good, but every single one strives to be great. They're curators of excellence and nothing else is close.

Not sure what you mean by cherry picked. That was their entire lineup for 2015, which was Netflix's first year of full production of original content. Prior to that it was basically Orange, House and a couple of re-distributed shows from other markets along with streaming rights. I'd also argue that the existing IP was the low point of that list.

2016 saw the ratio shift to more production, less quality control and it's been trending that way ever since and by 2019 there were so many shows that you aren't even aware of and I'm sure many people at Netflix don't even know exist.

You have to remember that HBO by 2015 had 25+ years of creating original programming. Netflix was on the ramp up, and certainly not to HBO's level, but they were trending that way.

I'd love to party with Don Neto though.

Honestly, I'm not even sure what "woke AF" means. The show (we finished it last night) has fantastic characters, very good dialog and interesting plots. What else do you want in a show?

Yes, there are lesbians, hispanics, activists and obnoxious white people. But there are obnoxious brown people too and I think it does a great job discussing a serious issue (the displacement of long term residents and changing neighborhoods based on inflows of money) in a funny, insightful way.

Pops may be one of my favorite characters this year.

Loved it. Big fan of Joaqun Cosio in Narcos and now Gentefied. I really dug Joseph Julian Soria's character too.

I'd put Gentefied up there with "Love" and "Atypical". Stumbled into all three shows and couldn't get enough of them.
