The Gambler dead at 81. What a voice he had.

Quote:

Vocalist Kenny Rogers, who dominated the pop and country charts in the 1970s and 1980s with a string of sleekly tailored hits and won three Grammys, has died. He was 81. Rogers "passed away peacefully at home from natural causes under the care of hospice and surrounded by his family," a representative for the singer said in a statement.

Kenny Rogers was the first cassette I remember owning and playing on my Toshiba brand "Walkman".

RIP Gambler.

Saw him at Bonnaroo in 2012 and Lionel Richie drove down from a scheduled appearance in Nashville and surprised him on stage. What a great show.

RIP to a legend.

Born in Houston. We had family friends that grew up with him. Of course the Houston Gamblers USFL we're named after him but he wasn't an owner.

Rip Gambler!

"You got to know when to hold em and know when to fold em. "

"Son, you dont have to fight to be a man."
"Dad, sometimes you gotta fight when you're a man."

Heard these lyrics alot when I was kid riding around on the farm in my dads pickup truck checking on the crops.

RIP Kenny. RIP.

On a lighter note. Hopefully Seinfeld pays tribute to a man that provided him some of the best 23 minutes of sight gag comedy in TV history.

So many memories listening to this man on my Dad's truck riding around the farm and on the barn radio. He had so many great songs

Saw him at the Oil Palace in about '83 or '84. One of my earliest memories of music since my dad was a huge fan, and the Gambler may be the first song I ever memorized (used to walk around the house singing it as a kid).

Always seemed like a nice guy.

Good ol Kenny Rogers -- his songs bring back great memories of the days my dad drove me to the ball fields for baseball, football, and soccer.

When I was in junior high choir, my teacher loved Kenny Rogers, and had me sing his song "Crazy" for our annual Choir show. It was the only solo I ever sang in my life. I remember practicing that song a million times in my bedroom, playing it on my record player while wearing my big headphones.

Speaking of choir, looks like the Angels in Heaven just had a wonderful addition!

When I was a little boy, riding around in the family car, I had to listen to a lot of that early 80's country.

Alabama, Willie Nelson, the Oak Ridge Boys. Of them all, I think I enjoyed Kenny Rogers the best.

I also remember at one time three big movies were in the same theater at the same time that I loved: Tron, the Secret of NIMH.....,and Six Pack.

His brother worked at the same company I did for years (Dallas area). He told us Kenny was his brother and his last name was Rogers. Most people didn't believe him. Sure enough one day he called Kenny from the office and put him on speaker and sure enough it sounded like him. A few weeks later he stopped by the office and took photos with everyone.

He seemed like a really good dude.

Had a friend in college with a portrait of Kenny Rogers on velvet. For 20 years I've been jealous of the most awesome painting known to man. Something like this
