Anybody else like this genre? I really enjoy Futurebirds, and just recently discovered Khruangbin.

What are some other artists you like?

Rodeo by FutureBirds is my jam.

I discovered Khruangbin from a "Barry" Episode. Really dig their style

Lol, you want craplahoma but not half of new mexico and a chunk of colorado? Thats both worse than current Texas and worse than original 1836 Texas.

Khruangbin is alt-country? Never heard that, but they're great, so right on. Laura Lee is stupid-hot and very talented.

Love some Futurebirds.

Whiskeytown is as essential as any others.

Here is a list:

  • Flying Burrito Brothers / Gram Parsons
  • Uncle Tupelo
  • Son Volt
  • Wilco - Being There and AM albums
  • Whiskeytown
  • Ryan Adams & the Cardinals
  • Drive by Truckers
  • American Aquarium
  • Old 97's (Band from Dallas)
  • Calexico
  • Lucinda Williams
  • Lera Lynn - The Avenues Album and back
  • Neko Case - Start with Blacklisted
  • The Bottle Rockets
  • Jason Isbell
  • Jason and the Scorchers
  • Fred Eaglesmith (Ralph's last show is a great live album)

That's just to name a few. This genre is kind of a loose term so there are a lot of artists to explore.

What would you consider them? They are just a little different than anyone else like them, except maybe Leon Bridges. I feel like they have more of a country feel than blues or R&B like Leon though.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through Jeff Tweedy's auto biography.

As for the genre, I enjoy the Jayhawks and a couple Wilco albums, but other than that haven't dived in too deep.

The Wood Brothers are another one I would classify here.

I would probably like a lot of the artists mentioned above, but the Old 97s are so great that I don't need any other band from this genre.

They're quite eclectic and could crank out a country album, I'm sure. I mainly hear soul, funk, psych, and I'm sure I'm leaving out others. Being from Houston and recording their albums near Brenham, the country influence has to be there.

I'll add SONS OF BILL to this list and recommend them often, much like Khruangbin.

*Edit: also BLITZEN TRAPPER

I would add lucero to the list, and any Ben Nichols side project.

Old 97s are maybe my favorite band. Rhett Miller is one of the best songwriters out there.

I saw them in Dallas a few years ago and they opened and closed with Timebomb. Opening and closing with the same song was baller AF.

Eh, kinda cringey IMO, but i've never seen anyone do that, either. That said, Old 97s are truly great, regardless of the label.
