Anyone read this? One of the most enjoyable science fiction books I've read. Highly recommend it....also taught me a lot about Chinese history.

I think it would make a great movie...would have to take a lot of the technical stuff out but I think it could be successful, kind of similar to parts of interstellar. Anyways, if you haven't heard of it check it out.

This has come up on a few of the books threads, quite a few big fans here, including myself. I just recently did a re-read of the series.

I completely disagree about it being a good movie though, unless it's like a 6 part series. I think it could be a great TV show though.

Honestly think they're the best books I've ever read.

I'm a fan, but not a huge fan, of the series.

I like that it gets into a lot of theoretical physics, which is neat. Good read for people that want to actually think about the laws of physics. But, those parts of the series seemed to drag on for me, and take away from the plot / action.

The parts that were best for me were the contrast of totalitarian governments vs. individualism, and the things that motivated people to each. The political commentary was actually my favorite, and done very, very well in my opinion.

Without spoilers, it did get way, way out there on the science end by the conclusion, but I guess that is what science fiction is about.

Overall, solid A and into A+ territory.

I liked the first book. By book 3 I could not wait to be done with it.

Book one. Cool as hell. Either the remaining were terrible or I didn't read them. Cant remember.

Totally forgotten about this.

Love sci-fi and appreciate books with some hard-science aspects.

Care to give the "book jacket summary" of the story?

Best book series I've read, and hope it gets made into a multi season series by HBO. An authorized follow up book was written and is also good, the redemption of time.

Weird. I thought the first book was the weakest of the three.

I agree. Took a lot of effort to get through. Hell, the entire series was rough, but at least in books two and three he built some really cool worlds and concepts. He sure took a roundabout and tedious method to present them, though. Like the guy with the weird fantasies (I won't put any more on here as a spoiler). I skimmed those worthless chapters to keep from being too bored. Each page I was thinking "wtf is the point here and why does he drone on and on about this?"

And the "game" was incredibly stupid, IMO. Every chapter with it I was tempted to skip, and I never do that in books. But each time I made myself push through it, assuming there was a point in there. But there never was, or at least nothing that couldn't have been handled in a couple hundred fewer pages. I rarely finish a book, reflect on it at the end, and feel that such a significant percentage felt so unnecessary (especially since it's literally the title of the book). If he cut most of that out, the story would've been pretty interesting and much easier to get through, and would've ended in the same place. I think that's why I disliked the first book so much, but to each his own.
