Quote:

5. Mama Tried by Merle Haggard
Couldn't agree more. Great lyrics and melody, a 31-year-old Merle in total control of his voice, and James Burton, Roy Nichols and Glen Campbell all playing on the same record.

Caveat - I grew up on the west coast being raised by native Texans that loved 60's/70's rock music. So I just don't have the pedigree for country classics. Not my thing. Mostly listened to country while at A&M. After A&M I moved to Dallas and pretty much went 95% back to my rock roots. Met my wife in late 97, also an Ag, and she was really in to country so it lingered. My favs:

Shania - No One Needs to Know
George - Baby Gotten Good at Goodbye
Garth - Baton Rouge
Faith Hill - The Way You Love Me
Martina McBride - This One's for the Girls
Suzy Bogguss - Drive South
Dixie Chicks - Cowboy Take Me Away (signature song at our wedding party)
Nashville Blues - Cory Morrow
Come Monday - Buffet
My Church - Maren
Songs About Texas - Pat Green
Gringo Honeymoon - REK

That's a pretty good list. I'd sneak in Hand on the Wheel by Willie, Rollin with the Flow by Charlie Rich, and a Gary Stewart song (just can't decide which Gary Stewart song).

Yeah. There is so much to think about with this one. I grew up listening to old country because of my dad. Between country and classic rock lies probably 90 percent of what I listen to. Really hard to narrow down and I left off many of my favorites like Neon Moon and Highwayman and Seven Spanish Angels

Don't mind me, just a non-country fan lurking and adding songs to my playlist. Also as a non-country fan, my opinion is that Neon Moon is one of the greatest songs of the 90's period, not just country song.

This is really difficult. I'm leaving out a couple of newer songs that I really like because they haven't stood the test of time yet. My list is based on content, sound, and how well they embody what country ought to be. This is super difficult and there are at least a hundred more songs by a dozen artists that I want to include.

Luckenbach Texas
Amarillo by Morning
He Stopped Loving Her Today
8 Second Ride
Neon Moon
The Dance
Hurt
Jolene
When you say nothing at all (either version)
The Gambler

And, of course, the number one best song of all time: Honky Tonk Badonkadonk
Elmo Lincoln

In no particular order.

Amarillo by Morning (George Strait)
Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain (Willie Nelson)
I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (Hank Williams)
Neon Moon (Brooks & Dunn)
Much Too Young (Garth Brooks)
Silver Wings (Merle Haggard)
Amanda (let's go with Waylon's version)
He Stopped Loving Her Today (George Jones)
Crazy (Patsy Cline)
Hello Darlin' (Conway Twitty)

Had the hardest time picking the Merle Haggard song. I could just have easily gone with Mama Tried or The Way I am. Or Kern River or Footlights. Or If We Make It Through December. Or Big City. Yea, Merle Haggard was a badace.

If Thunderstruck can be performed as bluegrass, Hurt can be performed as country.
