Post your top 10 country songs. One rule: only one song per artist. This isn't your 10 favorite George Strait songs.

Hurt is not a country song.
If Thunderstruck can be performed as bluegrass, Hurt can be performed as country.

Except it isn't performed as country.
Country is what you make it

Claude,

I've got to hand it to you. You're a clever guy! Throwing in lyrics from a Lacy J. Dalton song and from the Storyteller himself. Well done.

"Neon Moon" isn't country pop and the lyrics could fit across decades.

Now that's one helluva song and performance!

Had it been a single, I'm sure it would have been at the top of the charts, and Merle didn't even write it.

It would be very easy to make a top 10 list with no songs recorded after the 1970s. But I believe that quality country music is being produced today.

The last decade was heavily criticized for being dominated by both "bro country" and "boyfriend country". (and rightfully so). However, just because the genre has a lot of low talent hacks following corporate orders, doesn't mean that quality country music isn't being produced.

Zac Brown Band, Luke Combs, Midland, Sturgill Simpson (kind of), Chris Stapleton and Jon Pardi are still making really good country music. Jon Pardi's album "Heartache Medication" is one of the best albums I've ever heard (of any genre). The only reason I didn't include it is recency bias.

Chicken Fried is inoffensive, so in that regard it distinguishes itself from most current country. It has no business in a conversation about greatest country songs.

No particular order and omitting a lot of older classics because everyone has really been hammering those.

Seven Nights in Eire- Reckless Kelly
Nose on the Grindstone- Tyler Childers
Songs about Texas- Pat Green
Lost and Found- Brooks and Dunn
My Hometown- Charlie Robison
17- Cross Canadian Ragweed
Little Red Wagon- Miranda Lambert
They Call it the Hill Country- Randy Rogers Band
Idabel Blues- Stoney Larue
Stockyards- Casey Donahew Band

No offense, but "Little Red Wagon" doesn't belong on any greatest country music list. Even one comprised of mostly modern anti-Nashville artists.

And I agree with the poster who said "Hurt" is not a country music song. It's a NIN song sung by a country music legend. But I wouldn't categorize it as "country", and if I remember correctly, it was played mostly on rock stations when it was released.

Can't believe we made it this far down without mention of Keith Whitley's "Don't Close Your Eyes" (a few posts up). That song is so so good and I always think of it on any "best" list.

Also, goes to show you how amazing King George is that so many different posters here have different songs of his in their top 10s.

I won't go top 10, but I'll go top 5:

1) Friends in Low Places- Garth Brooks; just so iconic, so good, and drew so many non-country fans in. Maybe a lil over played, but that's not the songs fault.

2) Neon Moon - Brooks n Dunn

3) Cowboy Rides Away - George Strait

4) Don't Close Your Eyes - Keith Whitley

5) Keeper of the Stars - Tracy Byrd (not big on putting a guy who I really don't like otherwise on a top 5 list, but damn this song is sooo good)

Also, yeah I know I'm old and there's only one song on the list from the last 25 years. There've been other good lists & I might look into some of those artists that I'm not so familiar with.

Solid, solid picks.

Stewart recorded a lot of great material (including album cuts), but his performance of Drinkin' Thing just seems to explode with raw emotion.

And while Jones has a whole suitcase full of great country recordings, Roses knocks me on my ass every time I hear it.
