Looking for a new book, and I'm interested in something in greek, roman, or norse mythology. I have read and enjoyed (for the most part) American Gods by Gaiman. I'd like something telling the classic stories, but still approachable. Bonus points for great audio books on the subject.

If you like mythology, I'd also recommend

The Power of Myth

The Hero With A Thousand Faces

both by Joseph Campbell.

The Audible version where he reads the stories is awesome.

I really liked both books that Madeline Miller put out on mythology. Great writing in both. She took minor/side characters in other famous mythology stories and expanded their stories more.

Did not like Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. Rather, it's average IMO. Lots of repetitiveness and several of the stories are pretty boring. I would recommend if you just straight love mythology and want to learn some level of historical stories from a cultural/historical perspective, otherwise meh.

If you want some interesting fantasy books based on Greek mythology, try Fred Saberhagen's Book of Swords collection.

Loved these but read them so long ago I don't really recall the details of them.

I remember reading parts of the classic "Mythology" by Edith Hamilton in high school. Pretty dry with the most interesting thing being her sister Margaret Hamilton played the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz movie.

It was a pleasant surprise when the 14-year-old Muck got to the one where the guy spends half the book trying to hook up with the topless mermaid.
