After many recommendations across the last couple years (including here on texags), I finally sat down and watched this.
I've read through the season 1 and 2 Dark threads here on texags and just finished reading through the season 3 discussion on this thread. I also perused the top posts of all time on the dark subreddit.
Season 1 and 2 were amazing. Season 3 had some good moments and I feel did a good job closing a lot of the loops in nice ways... But I thought it was a much poorer season than the first 2.
Good job to BES, bobinator and the reddit folks in general who nailed the Adam and eve storyline prior to the start of season 3.
I know some didn't like the third world because it was "introduced at the 12th hour" but I thought it was well done and followed the theme set up from the very beginning (triality vs duality). The line at the end of season 2 (not when but what world) basically set it up in my mind that there would be 3 worlds.
My biggest gripe is with alexander/Boris storyline. The whole Clausen/Boris storyline from season 2 makes sense in that the story needed someone to "open the containers" and set off the apocalypse (something that is done by Charlotte and Ulrich in alt Eva's world)... And yet, I am just disappointed there was nothing more to Boris. A lot of time, space and mystery was set up in seasons 1 and 2 in his coming to winden, the murder in 86, marriage to Regina, power plant head, hannahs ultimatum to ruin either Ulrich or Charlotte (depending on universe), etc., and it was really all just one massive red herring? If that is really the case, how did this kid with little/no background in nuclear energy become head of the nuclear power plant after Claudia disappeared? If I'm understanding correctly, Boris shows up in 86 and Claudia disappears in 87... So Boris gets one year of experience and then takes over as head??
Maybe I'm nitpicking but I think something changed in the storyline there from season 1/2 to season 3. Or maybe I'm just not understanding it. I think it would have made a lot more sense for him to be a part of Noah or the alt Eva's "pieces" they put into play and that he gets to be where he is at the plant due to the triumpharate/3 unknown meddling like they did in other parts of season 3 to make sure he was the head of the plant and in place for the apocalypse.
The only other complaint and where I think the show failed in season 3 is all the back and forth with "trust". Jonas, you have to trust me/not him/only me/not her/neither/everyone/no one/only yourself/both/etc. I think the first 2 seasons did a better job of providing the viewer a way to understand what was going on, even if the character (typically Jonas) was confused in the show. As an example, I loved that the show was typically able to just move to another time seamlessly in season 1 and 2 without needing to show the viewer the date in big letters; everything was explained well enough and shown well enough that there was no need to tell us exactly what date/time we were in. Season 3 basically had to do the weird zoom noise and show the date every time we jumped worlds and time; even the show writers thought it'd be too confusing just jumping around. Another example would be the amount of pauses in season 3 that I needed to do to try to understand what was happening and process the implications was dramatically increased from seasons 1/2.
I think this show may have had the worst English dubs I've ever seen, although they definitely got better in season 2 and 3. As someone who watches everything with subtitles anyway, I will admit I still watched it with the English dubs... With so much complexity in the show, it was nice to basically get the information twice so my mind could process it; I'd hear the information first and then read it second (and use my imagination to make the dubbed voices not sound so bad).
I know this thread is basically over but I just wanted to share my thoughts after reading everyone else's. I'm also surprised that TTCTS wasn't in on this watch as I enjoy his thoughts. I definitely think this show would have benefitted from a weekly release schedule (but I am personally glad that I was able to binge watch it).
