One of my very favorite genres, albeit fleeting, shared a world of what could be in a time of great technological change. The ideas illustrated how the marriage of technology and humanity would alter our future were both visionary and strangely poignant. These films captured lightning in a bottle and served as time capsules encapsulating a zeitgeist of the future. Even music at the time wrapped its arms tightly around the future, never being complacent to what has come before and only thinking of what will come. There was a great desire to be unique, to be bold, and to be different. These films chose to peer through time's veil and deliver us a taste of the future. Below is a list of my personal favorites. If you have any others to add, please do so. If you have never some of these flicks, please do so and comment. The list is in no particular order and no rankings are needed.

Two months ago, I saw a provocative movie on cable TV. It was called "The Net", with the girl from "The Bus".

Kathryn Bigelow classic. It really nailed the possibilities of VR in a dystopian future. Angela Bassett was ****ing awesome in it as well.

I just read the Wikipedia plot to "The Net" which I vaguely remember seeing on VHS.

Convolution, dude.

Good niche list of flicks, OP.

Thanks and now you really must see the film again if only to see Dennis Miller and the Wolfenstein shout out.

Not completely a cyber-thriller, but Sneakers does have some interesting thoughts about how information is controlled and this was in 1992. Really good cast too!

Heh, they loved to use the term "jacking in" as well. Always makes me laugh to hear it. But hey, I like dick and fart jokes.

It also has one of the best opening scenes of any movie ever. So visceral, so cool. I love the no cut POV style shot. Perhaps it inspired Cuaron as he uses it heavily too.

The Net is a terrible, awful movie. It commits so many sins in it's display of technology... I think I've seen it at least 20 times, and if it ever comes on TV, I definitely watch it.

That very well might be my next list. If it is, Wild Things would be featured prominently.

As for The Net, that's one of the reasons why these movies are so amazing. It was all guess work but man did they take their shot.

How about the end of Johnny Mnemonic where the dolphin is the greatest at the net because I guess they took the term "surfing the internet" literally. I guess if you think about it that way, a dolphin certainly is a faster swimmer than a human? Who knows.

I was going to watch Strange Days with my family today but believe it or not it's not on any platform. iTunes, amazon prime, netflix, hbogo, DirecTV. Nada nothing. Movie might as well not exist! Johnny Mnemonic however...
