The scene were he's leaving for Rivendell and keeps "forgetting" to put it in the envelope on the mantle, then lashes out at Gandalf, and then feels amazing when he lets it drop is the best representation of what it feelsl like to be an addict in any movie ever.

Time Bandits was my favorite childhood movie, recently showed it to my kids - "that was weird" was maybe the nicest critique.
