Great movie. Thinking about introducing my kids to it.

The boys will be fine. Debating how my 8th grade daughter would do with all the blood.

If she is in 8th grade, she has already seen a lot worse.

It's pretty good.

My only complaint is that we found the only plantation owner in SC that freed his slaves. Very nit picky but still an entertaining movie.

You, who murdered a 100,000 Iraqis to save a nickel on a gallon of gas, are going to lecture me about the RULES OF WAR?!

DON'T!

It's because Gibson saw 2020 coming and didn't want the Patriot to be canceled, so he changed history!

Indeed. Made by a German, no less.

I was thinking that I have read somewhere along the way that the Benjamin Martin character was based on a number of real men, as well as William Tavington.

One of John Williams' best non-Spielberg, non-Lucas scores.

I wonder if the movie might have been improved to any degree had Tavington killed Martin at the end? Or would that have ruined it?

Definitely some creative liberties taken, no doubt. But I loved how this film got into the aspect of that war being "neighbor against neighbor". That it wasn't "fought on some distant battlefield or the frontier". I'm not sure how many people realized that about the Revolutionary War.

That's what I loved so much about Turn, it was more historically accurate but went even deeper into the war truly being fought among communities throughout the Colonies.

Some really good acting in The Patriot as well.

I lived in South Carolina for a time growing up, back when they actually taught history in school, and learning about how Francis Marion fought the British in the swamps. I really enjoyed that aspect of the film, along with the Charleston references.

Some great scenes. Martin going crazy and killing 15 soldiers in front of his sons is an amazing sequence.

But always seemed jarring how it would go from silly (with cheesy dialogue you'd expect from an Emmerich movie) to super dark. The church scene was a bit much...did the British actually ever commit such an atrocity on that many civilians?

Also, the whole black soldier story line (with the racist white soldier respecting him at the end of the movie) felt very forced. Not to mention how slaves are portrayed. I know many slaves were treated like family but it just seemed heavy handed.

But yeah, when channel surfing I stop every time.

Not sure about any church burnings with the entire town inside but Tavington is based on Banastre Tarleton. By most accounts he was a "butcher" and threatened civilian populations during the war. The British had to make special arrangements for him when they surrendered so he didn't receive reprisals.

We watched an edited version of the movie that made red to brown in Junior High during class. Your kid should be able to handle it at that age, even without making the blood look like mud.

Borderline great movie but there are two things holding it back.
  • First not historically accurate all, it's a theme among Mel Gibson movies where the movie takes grand liberties with the history they are depicting, I can post a video that goes into details if you really want to know how...
  • the Second is similar to note but of a personal grievance. The Battle of Cowpens(the climactic battle), was a much more impressive victory historically than even the movie depicted. In it the Continental Army completed a double envelopment and achieve a perfect tactical victory. Such victories are extremely rare(assuming similar sized armies) in military history and only a handful like Hannibal at Cannae are known. They not only defeated the British, they annihilated the advanced British army as a fighting force. I get that they wanted the grand scale of having Cornwallis and the bigger picture of the Revolution. But it would have been a better movie had they kept the scale smaller and show how big of an impact the victory made.

Not only that, Tarleton was also portrayed in Amazing Grace where he fought against the abolition of slavery. Basically the guy seemed to be on the wrong side of history at all turns.

Both can be good.

Also, I was just telling a friend how great 2000 was for historical epics. The Patriot and Gladiator in the same year.

It is. Every time I watch the movie and she cries "Papa!" when they are about to head off to fight I completely lose it.

Dang so two of the kids in this film died prematurely IRL.

Need to watch this again. Not sure I've seen it since it came out.

Good movie with some stunningly bad/hoaky sceneS in it.

Still, the 2 kids and a tomahawk ambush scene alone is worth the price or entry.

Whenever I have a bad day at work I envision.....well, never mind.
