Had some fun with my Cameron vs Fincher showdown last week, so I figured I'd do another one.

I was gonna take the winner (Cameron) and put him up against Spielberg, but I think I'm what gonna do is do four of these, and then put the four winners against each other.

(DS III will be Nolan vs Ridley Scott, and DS IV wil be Scorsese vs Kubrick.)

I'm going to choose 8 movies per director, so some will have to be left out. (So yes, a lot of deserving Spielberg movies unfortunately didn't make the cut.)

Here's your Round 1. (Note: I am counting Kill Bill as a single movie.)

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark vs 8. The Hateful Eight
2. Jaws vs 7. Jackie Brown
3. Jurassic Park vs 6. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
4. E.T. vs 5. Django Unchained
5. Schindler's List vs 4. Kill Bill
6. Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade vs 3. Reservoir Dogs
7. Saving Private Ryan vs 2. Inglourious Basterds
8. Catch Me If You Can vs 1. Pulp Fiction

Feel kind of bad for the Jurassic Park vs Once Upon a Time. OUATIH is still fairly recent and people were fanboying pretty hard, over it. I thought it was good, but not at the level of other's on this board.

However, I remember when Jurassic Park came out... it was such a historic movie. Still holds up and has one of my favorite John Williams scores.

I had to go with Jurassic Park on that one. Really, I only picked Django and Pulp Fiction, for Tarantino. I never cared for ET and, though I do very much enjoy Catch Me If You Can, I have to give the nod to Pulp Fiction. For most of those head-to-heads, you have a good to great Tarantino flick up against what I view as a cinema classic.

Edit: Oops. Forgot I went with Inglorious Basterds. Saving Private Ryan's opening scene is amazing, but I've never really had the desire to watch that movie again. Inglorious Basterds has some of the most suspenseful moments I've ever seen. That first scene and the basement scene are both so expertly written and acted.

Tarantino just got skunked.

I actually would go 4 and 4 myself, but I agree that OUATIH got a tough draw.

I would go with Basterds over Ryan because as amazing as the opening battle is, the rest of the movie is not nearly at that same level, whereas Basterds is brilliant throughout.

Kill Bill over Schindler's List because I absolutely loved Kill Bill. I was the perfect age for it and my high school buddies and I would watch it all the time.

Jackie Brown over Jaws cause it's just such a fun watch. A great "hangout" movie. Jaws was obviously before my time, although I do enjoy it and recognize its brilliance.

And Pulp Fiction obviously. Although I absolutely love Catch Me If You Can and consider it underrated.

Oh, and Django is absolutely one of my favorite movies of the past decade, but there is just no chance for anything in this poll to go up against ET for me. It's a direct line to my nostalgic heart.

Seeing SPR vs. IngB sent me into an "Ash" from Alien meltdown.

I love QT, but he got one vote with Pulp Fiction. Spielberg is basically my childhood.

Exactly. And Catch Me if You Can is quite good (love those opening credits!), just not quite Pulp Fiction level.

This was the only movie where I went QT over Spielberg.

Pulp Fiction is an amazing movie, but I'd rather watch Catch Me If You Can if you told me I had those two options. It's just more enjoyable

That was my toughest choice for the exact same reason. Pulp Fiction is obviously a classic, more "important," and probably "better" in the broad sense, but Catch Me if You Can is so incredibly rewatchable, and I a movie I enjoy more.

Jackie Brown is QT's best movie, imo. That seeding is terrible.

Jackie Brown may be QT's best, but Jaws is a perfect film.

Same here but don't love QT. This was a lopsided affair for me.

A ton of votes for this one, and to be honest none of these are much of a contest at the moment. I'll let this go for another couple of hours.

Well, what most of you suspected is what happened. Tarantino just got absolutely demolished.

Even Pulp Fiction, his one winner, struggled a bit early on.

Honestly, this contest sounded great in theory, but once I actually laid out Spielberg's top 8 movies, I got pretty worried for QT. And now, I'm actually worried no other director will be able to compete once all the winners face each other. That's just a murderer's row of great movies.

Round 1 Results:
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark vs 8. The Hateful Eight (99% - 1%)
2. Jaws vs 7. Jackie Brown (95% - 5%)
3. Jurassic Park vs 6. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (92% - 8%)
4. E.T. vs 5. Django Unchained (72% - 28%)
5. Schindler's List vs 4. Kill Bill (79% - 21%)
6. Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade vs 3. Reservoir Dogs (74% - 26%)
7. Saving Private Ryan vs 2. Inglourious Basterds (71% - 29%)
8. Catch Me If You Can vs 1. Pulp Fiction (28% - 72%)

I will say I had expected at least Inglourious Basterds to pull out a win. Such a brilliant movie. But I can understand the love for SPR due to its opening scene. Sad it had to go so soon.

Sidenote: It took almost 70 votes for Hateful Eight to grab its first (and only) vote over Raiders.

For now, this has pretty much become a Spielberg tournament....

Side-survey:

Better score between Jurassic Park and ET?

I give the edge to ET due to the last 15 minutes of that movie, but man, that's actually a toughie. Both some of Williams' best work.

Tough one. ET hit me squarely in my formative years so I went with that but Jurassic Park was monumentally influential. That was the first movie where CGI brought something to life. Incredible movie.

"ET depended absolutely on the concept of cinema and I think that Steven Spielberg, who I'm very fond of, is a genius. I think ET is a quite extraordinary piece of cinema."
For the record, I agree with Mr. Hammond. ET deserved it over Gandhi.

re: QT, and I'm going to sound like a complete prude, but his first few movies made him seem like a pre-teen who discovered cussing. Everything prior to Inglorious Basterds seems so juvenile bc of the over-cussing. Those are good movies but...

We watched it in high school. It's not bad, but a pretty by-the-numbers biopic. Nothing about it really stood out except maybe Kingsley's performance.
