On the film ET, which was also nominated for best picture and best director at the 1983 Academy Awards Oscars that Lord Attenborough's Gandhi walked away with.

"[ET] was an infinitely more creative and fundamental piece of cinema [than Gandhi]."

"(Business partner Diana Hawkins) and I went to see ET in Los Angeles shortly before all the awards and we used language when we came out, to the extent of saying 'we have no chance - ET should and will walk away with it'

"Without the initial premise of Mahatma Gandhi, the film would be nothing. Therefore it's a narrative film but it's a piece of narration rather than a piece of cinema, as such.

"ET depended absolutely on the concept of cinema and I think that Steven Spielberg, who I'm very fond of, is a genius. I think ET is a quite extraordinary piece of cinema."
For the record, I agree with Mr. Hammond. ET deserved it over Gandhi.
I've never even seen Gandhi.
He's been dead for 72 years not a lot of people have seen him.

I know that he's bald and wears funny glasses.

Wait...maybe that's the Dalai Lama.

To be honest, I am pleasantly surprised about the Jurassic Park vote. I really though Tarantino would win that one because so many on this forum seemed to love it so much.

The score is the only thing I love about ET, but I still put Jurassic park above it. There are very few scores I put over that score.

When will someone do one of these for movie scores?

On the current poll... that was easy. It truly is amazing how many great movies Spielberg has done. The differ so greatly in subject matter, and are all so enjoyable. They may not be the artsiest movies, but they are so entangled in our culture.

Pulp Fiction hangs on to get QT into the Final Four, in the only closely contested matchup.

Round 2 Results:

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark vs 8. Saving Private Ryan (79% - 21%)
2. Pulp Fiction vs 7. Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade (58% - 41%)
3. Jaws vs 6. Schindler's List (71% - 29%)
4. Jurassic Park vs 5. ET (75% - 25%)

ET did make it interesting for the first 20 votes or so, but Jurassic Park pulled away after that.

And here are your Final Four matchups.

Match 1:

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark

vs

4. Jurassic Park

Match 2:

2. Pulp Fiction

vs

3. Jaws

Raiders vs JP will be close. I think Jaws will take down Pulp Fiction easily.

so it only took him about 20 years to grow up?

Goodfellas, Wolf of Wall Street and Casino all have worse language than any QT movie.

Well, Jurassic Park hung in there and fought tooth and nail, but in the end Raiders pulled it out.

Pulp Fiction gave a respectable showing but never made it past 35% or so.

Final Four results:

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark (57%) vs 4. Jurassic Park (43%)
2. Pulp Fiction (32%) vs 3. Jaws (68%)

This is probably the inevitable finale most would have expected....

Championship:

Raiders of the Lost Ark

vs.

Jaws

No reason to stretch this one out when it's pretty much a done deal.

Your champion:
Raiders of the Lost Ark, by a margin of 78%-22%.

We've now got James Cameron and Steven Spielberg in the final tournament, to be joined by the winners of the final two contests.

Thanks for voting. Director Showdown III (Nolan vs Scott) will be up later today.

i didn't but i was sitting here thinking....who could the 4th matchup be. i mean there really isn't another choice unless you wanted go either old school with Hitchcock or Welles or quirky with Woody Allen.

Glad to see we were on the same page. In the modern era anyway those are the top 8 - imho.

You could make a case for Eastwood I suppose. Cohen brothers maybe.

The guy who I strongly considered but didn't quite make the top 8 was Paul Thomas Anderson.

Yeah... I'm seeing a sweep on that one!

Big Lebowski
Fargo
True Grit
O Brother Where art Thou
No Country for Old Men

Can't think of a Clint Eastwood movie I would put over any of those.

Eastwood has a lot of great movies:

Outlaw Josey Wales
Unforgiven
Bridges of Madison County (chick flick but still acclaimed)
Mystic River
Million Dollar Baby
Flags of Our Fathers
Letters from Iwo Jima
Gran Torino
American Sniper
Zombie Jon Snow

Bridges of Madison County (chick flick but still acclaimed)
Mystic River
Million Dollar Baby - winner of Best Picture and Director
Flags of Our Fathers
Letters from Iwo Jima

American Sniper

Only 5 of those were nominated for Best Picture - with 2 wins. And 2 director wins also.

Yeah nothing special. lol.

Flags of our Fathers is hands down one of the most depressing movies I've ever seen in my life.
