Final showdown before the final mega-tournament of all 4 winners.

So far we've got Cameron, Spielberg, and Nolan in the winners circle. Hoping for another matchup as good as the last one.

Round 1:
1. Goodfellas vs 8. Barry Lyndon
2. Taxi Driver vs 7. Spartacus
3. The Departed vs 6. Full Metal Jacket
4. Raging Bull vs 5. Eyes Wide Shut
5. The Wolf of Wall Street vs 4. Dr. Strangelove
6. The Aviator vs 3. A Clockwork Orange
7. The Irishman vs 2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
8. Casino vs 1. The Shining

Vote now!

Wow. I only voted on two of these matchups because I haven't seen several of these.

Never even heard of Barry Lyndon.

If there attached video clips, Wolf of Wall Street would win every contest with 100% of the vote.

That and Raging Bull are the only 2 I haven't seen.

Went back and voted for one more matchup. Forgot I had seen The Aviator. Was thinking it was something else for some reason.

I'd go Scorsese 5-3 myself.

I almost made the argument for 5-3 Kubrick but gave him Spartacus over Taxi Driver...which was quite difficult.

Although I like more Scorsese movies, the three Kubrick movies I would take would have a very difficult time being knocked out by Scorsese (or anyone, really).

Shining, 2001, and Eyes Wide Shut are some of my favorites of all time.

For me...

1. Goodfellas vs 8. Barry Lyndon - easy
2. Taxi Driver vs 7. Spartacus - extremely tough
3. The Departed vs 6. Full Metal Jacket - fairly difficult
4. Raging Bull vs 5. Eyes Wide Shut - extremely tough
5. The Wolf of Wall Street vs 4. Dr. Strangelove - easy
6. The Aviator vs 3. A Clockwork Orange - easy
7. The Irishman vs 2. 2001: A Space Odyssey - easy
8. Casino vs 1. The Shining - fairly difficult

Ok I'll be that guy.... but not too big of a quibble. But Probably should have had Gangs of New York instead of Casino. The only Oscar nom for Casino was for Sharon Stone. No best picture or director nomination for that one.

Gangs was nominated for best picture and best director and won the Golden Globe for Director.

Absolutely incredible though that between these two guys we have 13 Best Director nominations and 1 win. Travesty. And I think 11 Best Picture nominees also and 1 win.

I'm at 4-3 Kubrick but deadlocked on one of them.....

Nobody really likes that movie though. But it's just personal preference of Casino over Gangs.

Plus, Cameron Diaz's performance bring it way down.

Gangs may be more acclaimed, but no doubt that Casino is the better movie.

The Departed vs. Full Metal Jacket is really tough. FMJ is always a hard movie for me to rate.

1st half of FMJ = one of my absolute favorite movies

2nd half of FMJ = a pretty crappy movie. It's a very generic war movie.

This movie falls off a cliff after they leave boot camp (or after Gomer Pyle shoots himself). The Departed though only gets better as the movie goes along.

I'm wrong, I went 6-2 with Scorsese. I'm not a huge fan of Kubrick though. A Clockwork Orange is the only movie of his that I really, really like.

I don't even see how it is a race between Raging Bull and Eyes Wide Shut

EWS bored the bejesus out of me

I turned Eyes Wide Shut off about half way through.

Eyes Wide Shut grows on you. Didn't really like it my first viewing, but have since appreciated it more and more.

Agree with the above. EWS is an iceberg of a movie where the biggest themes of the movie are mostly under the surface, imo.

Barry Lyndon should have been left off. Paths of Glory (or even Lolita) is a much more relevant film. Barry Lyndon is almost a niche movie. Even with those, Goodfellas gets the nod.

The only other one Scorcese even possibly gets the nod on is Raging Bull.

Wolf was a 3 hour movie with no depth. Entertaining, but not exactly breaking any ground.

Disagree but I get it. Sort of. But when I'm watching FMJ I'm not dreading the second half. It's like a classic football game though where there are two completely different halves. Still great overall.

Personally I loved both halves of FMJ.... the second half has great quotes and is a more realistic war movie than many - the depravity, the absurdity of it all, the senselessness, etc. The first half was a complete masterpiece I agree; with a tour de force performance by Gunnery Sgt. Hartman (Lee Ermey) and that alone has 50 quotes.

But the 2nd half has just an incredible array of humanity on display at it's worst. And there is Joker who has seen some **** and is smarter than most soaking it all in and commenting on it in heavy sarcasm. The big block quote with the Colonel below sums up the second half of the movie basically - the duality of man indeed. The sniper situation in the ambush in the city is so well done. What a waste. It was definitely some commentary on the war.

"How can you shoot women or children?"
"Easy! Ya just don't lead 'em so much! Ain't war hell?"

"I wanted to see exotic Vietnam... the crown jewel of Southeast Asia. I wanted to meet interesting and stimulating people of an ancient culture... and kill them. "

"The dead know only one thing: it is better to be alive."

"Well, baby, me so horny. Me so HORNY. Me love you long time. You party?"

Pogue Colonel: Marine, what is that button on your body armor?
Private Joker: A peace symbol, sir.
Pogue Colonel: Where'd you get it?
Private Joker: I don't remember, sir.
Pogue Colonel: What is that you've got written on your helmet?
Private Joker: "Born to Kill", sir.
Pogue Colonel: You write "Born to Kill" on your helmet and you wear a peace button. What's that supposed to be, some kind of sick joke?
Private Joker: No, sir.
Pogue Colonel: You'd better get your head and your ass wired together, or I will take a giant **** on you.
Private Joker: Yes, sir.
Pogue Colonel: Now answer my question or you'll be standing tall before the man.
Private Joker: I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man, sir.
Pogue Colonel: The what?
Private Joker: The duality of man. The Jungian thing, sir.
Pogue Colonel: Whose side are you on, son?
Private Joker: Our side, sir.
Pogue Colonel: Don't you love your country?
Private Joker: Yes, sir.
Pogue Colonel: Then how about getting with the program? Why don't you jump on the team and come on in for the big win?
Private Joker: Yes, sir.
Pogue Colonel: Son, all I've ever asked of my marines is that they obey my orders as they would the word of God. We are here to help the Vietnamese, because inside every gook there is an American trying to get out. It's a hardball world, son. We've gotta keep our heads until this peace craze blows over.
Private Joker: Aye-aye, sir.

Personally I thought the Departed drug on a bit in the second half. But I dod love it too.

The majority of Scorsese's films are 45-60 minutes too long.

Departed was excellent, but too long.

Wolf was good, but good grief it dragged on and on.

Casino even should have been trimmed a bit.

The Irishman is just a bad movie with good actors.

yeah i mentioned the Scorsese inclusion of Casino vs. Gangs of NY. But either is gonna lose to The Shining.

Likewise yes I would have included Lolita and Paths of Glory over Barry Lyndon and Spartacus probably - but any of those 4 are losing to Goodfellas and Taxi Driver. imho.

I'm surprised this many people have actually seen it. Only reason I put Barry Lyndon in is thinking more people had seen it due to being more recent.

Same with Lolita. (Hadn't seen it until this year, actually.)

Let's be honest, none of the three had a chance though.

Can't quite place it but I'm definitely getting more intrigued about watching Wolf of Wall Street the more I return to this thread.
