Just here to ***** about one of the greatest deceptions of our times. The world became convinced that Johnny won that duel somehow. The Devil ALWAYS wins this battle hands down in every version possible. His riffs are mean and badass and conquer all!

I saw a theory recently that I really loved. The devil knows he won, but by playing Johnny into a point of extreme pride that Johnny will no doubt brag about the rest of his life, he also knows that he'll claim Johnny's soul at the end regardless.

Maybe the devil was playing the long game, but the devils solo is the worst part (if its possible to even have a worst part of such a great song). Its not good.

No no no.

The devil CANNOT win because he cheated. It was a one on one fiddle contest and he was better (maybe) ONLY because the devil cheated by enlisting a band of demons ("a band of demons joined in and it sounded like this...").

So Johnny's pure solo WAS better... but even if you think Johnny showed too much pride and would in his life after that. First he can reconcile that with God thru confession and be absolved of that sin. And in the end the devil cannot claim to have won anyway, because he cheated.

If the devil's goal is to take Johnny's soul then he would have just taken it after the duel. Why would he need/want to play the long game like that and wait? I've heard this theory a lot, but it doesn't make any sense. Does the devil have a limit on souls and he's currently at capacity so he's trying to save johnny's soul for later?
