His start coincided with my start at A&M. Ghost of Virginia has been in my regular shuffle ever since.

Sucks. I like a lot of his stuff and saw him once in Denton. It's a terrible thing to go through and deal with a life of that kind of addiction. Assuming that's the cause of death.

The video quality sucks, but in this clip you can see how far his dad fell into addiction before he got clean and stayed clean. Too bad Justin wasn't able to do the same.

A shame, I've always enjoyed his music. Far too young

I've kinda wondered if being named for Townes Van Zandt and being the son of Steve was a burden or a gift. Either way, no father should ever have to bury his son. Sad.

Dude made his own way, really liked his music.

First time I discovered him was one of his songs playing on the first episode of justified "someday I'll be forgiven for this". I was hooked.

Yeah, there were probably some odds in play, growing up around addiction and mood swinging artists.

Pretty glassy eyed, but not a bad performance at all.

To clarify, I thought the performance was great. It was his physical appearance that I was referring to.

Maybe I missed an inside joke - but the video is Steve Earle, Justin's dad.

Waylon is a character from the TV show "The Wire". He is a recovering addict who plays a mentoring role in helping one of the characters, Bubbles, get clean and off the streets through NA meetings and providing wisdom learned through experience.

The character of Waylon is played (very well) by Steve Earle.

Thanks for the explanation. I knew Steve was on The Wire, but don't have HBO so I've never seen it.

No real surprise, but OD is suspected as the cause of death:

Steve Earle released a tribute album earlier this month, where he sings several of Justin's songs. Been listening to it the past few days, and it's a pretty interesting blend of their two styles. Proceeds from it are going to Justin's daughter.
