They do this on the local talk radio station in Dallas. Just curious to see other responses. Use the same categories and give me your band or musical artist that you:

Hate - Rod Stewart - there are a couple of good ones and I like his stuff from The Faces but most of it beats me down.

Overrated - Aerosmith - anything after '78 sucks, well maybe one or two good ones but I don't like much from them

Under-appreciated - Steve Winwood. Only in the HOF for Traffic. He fronted 3 hugely successful and influential bands Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith and Traffic, was also a prolific studio session guy and had another huge run of hits as a solo artist. Should be in the HOF twice at least.

Listen to Over and Over - Led Zeppelin doesn't matter when or where and I'll put one of my many LZ playlists on at least once a week while working.

Made me Fall in Love with Music - Earth Wind and Fire - they just hit that period right when I got my first stereo and their I Am album was one of my first purchases at 12 years old. Have always loved their music. Such class acts too.

Changed my Life - Rush - took up drumming right then too in 1978 and another drummer turned me onto them thru 2112 and other stuff after that. Made me love being a drummer and want to emulate Neil Peart.

Surprised Me - ZZ Top - circa 1981 I was on the verge of moving to Texas and a neighbor older teen had tickets to a ZZ Top El Loco concert and invited me along. Was not yet into any blues based rock and did not really know anything older just Tubesnake Boogie and Pearl Necklace from that album. I decided togo since I thought well they are from Texas. Incredible show and I was hooked. Also saw my fist live boobs there with the many girls flashing. That cemented my love for rock and roll.

Guilty Pleasure - Toto - some of it is sappy of course but I don't care

Should Have Seen Live by Now - Bruce Springsteen - I know I should see him at least once I just never have

Great Live Band - Rush - of course just saw them too many times and loved it always

Favorite - Police - just flat out my favorite band of all-time. Intelligent deep lyrics, great music, tight 3 piece band. Perfection.

Honorable Mention - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Such a great band. So many hits spanned so many decades and also great live band.

Hate -REO Speedwagon or any AOR from the early 80s. They seemed the cheesiest.

Overrated - Nirvana. Don't hate them, but they should not be listed among the top 20 artists of all time.

Under-appreciated - ZZ Top, so much more than one album

Listen to Over and Over - Red Hot Chili Peppers. Favorite band of all time

Made me Fall in Love with Music - Prince

Changed my Life - November Rain was probably the first song I ever obsessed over.

Surprised Me - John Mayer. Opened for Counting Crows, and thought he was much better.

Guilty Pleasure - 311

Should Have Seen Live by Now - Metallica

Great Live Band - White Stripes

Favorite - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Honorable Mention - Allman Brothers Band

Okay, fine.

Hate - Neil Diamond I've come around a bit in recent years, but my mom played him constantly for a few years and really burned me out.

Overrated - Rolling Stones Fight me. I just remembered, The Doors. Ugh.

Under-appreciated - I know he's becoming an elder statesman / icon now, but "Weird Al" Yankovic was a considered a fading fad for decades

Listen to Over and Over - Lots of things, really.

Made me Fall in Love with Music - This is out of left field, but my grandparents had a music box with the theme from "Love Story" when I was about 7. I just thought it was really pretty, and I think that's when I started to think about what went into music I liked / not liked.

Changed my Life - Besides Al, I'll say the pop music scene of 1984. Before that, the charts had a lot of things I could take or leave - disco, punk-inspired pop, fledgling new wave, etc. That year was just fun hit after fun hit.

Surprised Me - A few years after Stevie Ray Vaughan died, I went to see his brother Jimmie Vaughan in a small venue. I was expecting a shadow of Stevie living off his brother's name, but the man could capital-P Play.

Guilty Pleasure - Erasure, except I don't feel guilty at all

Should Have Seen Live by Now - Paul McCartney, but that train's probably sailed.

Great Live Band - Stephen Lynch is funny as hell live

Favorite - Oy.

Honorable Mention - Guster I had a "GUSTER" license plate for a few years.

Listen to Over and Over - Led Zeppelin, Beastie Boys, Nirvana, Jars of Clay

Made me Fall in Love with Music - ???

Changed my Life - Worship music

Surprised Me - White Stripes, Jack White solo

Guilty Pleasure - 90s "girl" bands like Breeders, Veruca Salt, Liz Phair

Should Have Seen Live by Now - Foo Fighters

Great Live Band -

Favorite - Too many to list

Honorable Mention - Soundgarden, Linkin Park

Hate - Tracy Chapman. Every time I hear Fast Car, I hope it'll be driven into a wall.

Overrated - The Who. They've got a handful of great songs, but a lot of their stuff just doesn't do it for me.

Under-appreciated - Marty Robbins. Great country voice, great catalogue. His "Don't Worry" was one of the first songs to feature a guitar fuzz effect.

Listen to Over and Over - Bob Seger. It's like putting on a warm jacket made of rock 'n roll nostalgia.

Made Me Fall in Love with Music - Bon Jovi, I guess.

Changed My Life - n/a. I like music, but I wouldn't say that any of it has changed my life.

Surprised Me - Tupac. He had a bit more going on than your typical 90s rapper, and Hit 'Em Up makes all other diss tracks pale in comparison.

Guilty Pleasure - Lana Del Rey. She seems like a girl whose kisses would taste like menthol cigarettes and regret, but I enjoy her boozy lounge act.

Should Have Seen Live by Now - n/a. I don't go to concerts typically.

Great Live Band - n/a.

Favorite - Pink Floyd. Been my favorite band since I was about fourteen, and I've seen nothing coming since then to change that opinion. Note: I've never done drugs.

Honorable Mention - Waylon Jennings. Incredibly influential in country music, and one of the best voices for the genre.

Hate - The Cure. Ya, Fridays are great. That's why they have TGI Fridays. Can my sister have her eyeliner back now?

Overrated - The Grateful Head - even in my pot smoking days I didn't get the hype.

Under-appreciated - Supertramp - Great music that was well recorded.

Listen to Over and Over - Sublime - I think I listened to Second Hand Smoke for a year straight.

Made me Fall in Love with Music - Weird Al - Hear me out: I listened to Weird Al as a young kid. He covers so many styles that he got me listening to stuff I never would have tried. His parodies and pastiches both lead me down some cool rabbit holes, be it the Police, James Brown, or Devo.

Changed my Life - Pink Floyd - Ya, I'll let y'all guess how.

Surprised Me - Prince. Never really gave him a chance until his RnR HOF performance with Tom Petty. Blew me away.

Guilty Pleasure - Taylor Swift - Hey, man, there is some real joy in singing along to tracks with your 3 teenage nieces.

Should Have Seen Live by Now - Metallica - Always wanted to check it out.

Great Live Band - Tool - What did I just watch?

Favorite - NOFX - "Username checks out"

Honorable Mention - The Avett Brothers - Wife got me into them and it's been a fine ride.

Ya, neither had my old man until he came to visit me in Colorado around his 68th birthday. After a couple of gummies he enjoyed getting lost in Dark Side and the Wall so much that I was afraid he wasn't going to leave. My mom still gives me a heard time about that. All things in moderation, my good Claude.

Hate -Jefferson Starship and all reformed bands of them

Overrated Coldplay. I like them. But I don't understand getting a tattoo of them.

Under-appreciated - David Gray. Amazing musician, songwriter, and singer. I think most of you would Babylon if you heard it. But it is not even in the top ten of his best songs. White Ladder is one of the best albums of the 21st century

Listen to Over and Over - The Drive By Truckers. They are there for highs, lows, and just wanting jam.

Made me Fall in Love with Music Charley Pride. Smooth vocals and charming songs.

Changed my Life -REM. Perfect Circle introduced me to them and I realized there was a whole world out there of music that represented who I was and saw myself to be.

Surprised Me - Cake Really got into them in the early 2000's. Fun, witty, and a variety of styles.

Guilty Pleasure - Barry Manilow. Except I don't feel guilty. That man is a showman live.

Should Have Seen Live by Now - Ben Harper. I was supposed to do that last October. He was scheduled after Jason Isbell. And then lightning storm hit.

Great Live Band - Depeche Mode. They are really spectacular.

Favorite - Pearl Jam. Is there any question it would be that for me?

Honorable Mention - Old 97's. I can just pop in a live concert and listen on a long drive and never find a bad song.

Band or musical artist that you:

Hate - Green Day

Overrated - Coldplay

Under-appreciated - Genesis (Duke and later albums, with Collins, Banks, and Rutherford.)

Listen to Over and Over - tie - Rush and Kansas.

Made me Fall in Love with Music - Honestly, Herbert von Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. I loved classical music first.

Changed my Life - Kansas. That's the band that truly kickstarted my appreciation for rock music.

Surprised Me - The Black Keys. Amazing that two guys could make that much sound.

Guilty Pleasure - Baby Metal. Sumimasen.

Should Have Seen Live by Now - Rush. I always thought I'd have another chance, but never got around to doing it.

Great Live Band - Huey Lewis and the News. Seen them several times and always had a great time.

Favorite - Rush. No contest.

Hate - Today's pop music. Everything is digital, autotuned, and nobody uses a real drummer anymore. There's no dynamics. It's sad.

Overrated - Metallica. I like Metallica, seen them in concert, but hey, they peaked at Master of Puppets.

Under-appreciated - Queensryche (when Chris Degarmo was in the band) Operation Mindcrime, Empire, and Promised Land are all great albums. Degarmo was a great song writer, guitar player, and the soul of the band.

Listen to Over and Over - Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Eric Johnson, SRV, Yes, Genesis (w/ Peter Gabriel), too many to list.

Made me Fall in Love with Music - Tears for Fears album Songs from the Big Chair - I was in 4th grade, and this was the 1st album I ever bought. They were so much better song writers than most of the other 80's pop they were lumped into.

Changed my Life - I don't know about this one. Appetite for Destruction came out when I was going into 7th grade, and that broke huge and changed a lot of what I listened to at the the time. I was also learning to play guitar around that same time.

Surprised Me - Muse. Matt Bellamy is really talented.

Guilty Pleasure - Live - Throwing Copper was a great album, saw them in Dallas or Arlington after that album came out. I wasn't expecting much because they were terrible on SNL, but the show was really good.

Should Have Seen Live by Now - I don't know, The Rollings Stones maybe.

Great Live Band - Queensryche - I still remember seeing them April 23, 1991 in Odessa, TX on their Building Empire tour - phenomenal. Saw them again in Odessa in '95 on their Promised Land tour, great again.

Favorite - Eric Johnson. Seen him play live at least a dozen times, always great.

Honorable Mention - Dream Theater - those guys are way too good musicians to be in a rock band.

Band or musical artist that you:

Hate - The Record Company. The word "derivative" comes to mind for every song of theirs.

Overrated - The Avett Brothers. So many others in that genre do it better, but they market themselves well.

Under-appreciated - James McMurtry. His disinterest in pursuing fame probably guarantees under-appreciation.

Listen to Over and Over - John Prine, particularly since his death.

Made me Fall in Love with Music - Either Glenn Campbell ("Rhinestone Cowboy") or Michael Martin Murphey ("Wildfire"). Both fairly cheesy in hindsight, but I was 5 years old when they were released.

Changed my Life - John Cougar/Mellencamp - Pink Houses made me first appreciate songs with social commentary.

Surprised Me - constantly surprised by the talent that doesn't get airplay, so I'll go with my latest. Justin Townes Earle's death this week caused me listen closely to him for the first time (I'm a big fan of his dad's). Never realized what an impressive guitar player he was.

Guilty Pleasure - whatever 80's dance noise my wife sneaks into the shuffle on our road trip play list.

Should Have Seen Live by Now - U2

Great Live Band - Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. Quality performance, sound mix and venue choice every time I've seen them.

Favorite - Current would be Sturgill Simpson. Covers lots of ground and does it well.

Honorable Mention - Mellencamp will always be in my playlist rotation.

Hate - LCD Soundsystem. I've tried multiple times and can't find one song of theirs I like. I just don't get the love for them.

Overrated - The Beatles. They are great but there is a lot of music I like much more than them. They aren't the end of every conversation on great music that people think they are.

Under-appreciated - The Used. They have been quietly putting out incredible studio albums year after year.

Listen to Over and Over - Carly Rae Jepsen. Truly no skips on her albums, could listen to emotion on repeat forever.

Made me Fall in Love with Music - Blink 182. First band I saw in concert and ushered in my love of punk rock.

Changed my Life - Nine Inch Nails. Has been my favorite band for a long time. Represented huge changes in my taste of music.

Surprised Me - The Cardigans. Most people only know them for lovefool but their albums are great start to finish

Guilty Pleasure - Limp Bizkit. I don't really do guilty pleasures but I can recognize how terrible Chocolate Starfish is. Significant Other still slaps

Should Have Seen Live by Now - Korn. Have been a fan since high school and for some reason I just haven't gone, had tickets to finally see them this summer but 'rona had other plans

Great Live Band - Metallica. Not just great but the greatest live band period. I will pay any amount of money to see them live when they tour.

Favorite - Britney Spears. Yes, I'm serious. Seen her live several times and own all her albums. I don't care if she isn't the best singer, she has a unique and distinct voice that I happen to love. Out of her 9 studio albums there isn't one that I don't like, she's changed her style several times and still put out consistently good material. Her music is permanently on rotation for me

Honorable Mention - Katy Perry. Wildly under-rated. Teenage Dream is one of the greatest albums of all time.

Hate - Dan & Shay: If I hear that terrible song Tequila one more time... Took me a minute to think of an answer for hate but then I remembered this song. Their other stuff I've heard is bad too.

Overrated - Zac Brown Band: Just always thought they're not near as good as they're touted to be. I think at one point they were talking about how they didn't like the pop-country that was coming out. But then I listen to their stuff and think "What makes this any different or better than other pop country?"

Under-appreciated - Foo Fighters: So many people only know the big radio hits. That song Pretender was overplayed and I honestly got pretty sick of it and it still doesn't sound good to me. However, their other songs are full of so many hits and classics, and there are some deeper tracks that are great that not many people know of because they're not played on the radio.

Listen to Over and Over - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: I listen to a lot of Petty regularly. RIP.

Made me Fall in Love with Music - Oldies and the Beatles One album

Changed my Life - Pearl Jam: The album Ten specifically. What a masterpiece.

Surprised Me - Queens of the Stone Age: One of my favorite bands now. I branched out from their couple of big radio hits and now have a few of their albums. Maybe not 'surprising' given No One Knows is so good, but more so surprising that I would like them as much as I did.

Guilty Pleasure - I guess I might put Taylor Swift here, not really a 'band' though. Band wise, maybe Panic! At The Disco for some songs (I know...I know).

Should Have Seen Live by Now - Metallica. Was supposed to see them in '08 down in Houston but had to sell my ticket because I had a test get rescheduled!

Great Live Band - I haven't seen enough to really put one here.

Favorite - Deftones: Love the melodies, the guitars, the cadences, the voice. Def my favorite.

Honorable Mention - Creedence Clearwater Revival

Hate -Luke Bryan, bro-country at its worst.

Overrated - BTS, don't get it--Jefferson Airplane if going old school

Under-appreciated - Jimmy Buffett, he is so much more than Margarittaville or cheeseburger in Paradise

Listen to Over and Over - Stevie Ray Vaughn, enough said.

Made me Fall in Love with Music - Stevie Wonder

Changed my Life - Michael Franti and Spearhead, just discovered him in the last ten years or so, but always puts me in a good mood

Surprised Me -Bruno Mars\Justin Timberlake, both super talented entertainers.

Guilty Pleasure - Grease soundtrack

Should Have Seen Live by Now - Neal Young

Great Live Band -

Favorite - Beatles to RUSH to Charlie Daniels, too many to pick from

Honorable Mention - Robert Earl Keen

Hate - Smash Mouth. I know I'm not alone in this but one of the first real fights my now-wife and I got in when we were dating is because I turned her radio off HARD when All-Star came on. I know you shouldn't mess with someone else's radio but **** that song.

Overrated - not sure. Muse? They're aight but a few of their hits rub me the wrong way.

Under-appreciated - Thin Lizzy. Everyone knows the Boys Are Back In Town but they have a really deep list of rock songs. A stretch of 5 damn good albums, and the rest ain't bad either. Probably underappreciated outside of Ireland.

Listen to Over and Over - Barry White. This guy ruled! What a voice.

Made me Fall in Love with Music - Doobie Brothers as a child

Changed my Life - not so much life-changing but I got into Tool in junior high and that was probably the first time I found my own kind of music to get into, and not just what my brother liked.

Surprised Me - Earth Wind & Fire. Great stuff.

Guilty Pleasure - DragonForce. I know it's cheesy as hell but I discovered them right at the end of high school, thanks to Guitar Hero.

Should Have Seen Live by Now - The Who / Rolling Stones / the Eagles. I'm probably many years too late on them all. Other than them, I feel like I've seen everyone I want to see.

Great Live Band - Foo Fighters. One of the best live shows I've ever seen, and not because there was X guest performer or anything like that. Just really, really solid.

Favorite - Thin Lizzy again. Pirated their whole catalog in college, hit play and just listened to 8 hours straight before getting to a bad one (their very first). Hooked ever since.

Honorable Mention - shout out to Eric Johnson, I never really listen anymore but damn good guitarist

Changed my Life - Led Zeppelin was the first band which made look into an artist's full backlog and listen to everything they'd done. Changed the way I look at music instead of just listening to the current popular bands.

Hate - The Eagles and in particular Hotel California. I'm ok with some of their music, but I really despise Hotel California.

Overrated - Radiohead. I like a few of their songs, but all in all, I just don't get the praise that is heaped on them.

Under-appreciated - Professor Longhair. He's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but I bet most people wouldn't know it. I love his rambling, boogie woogie, r&b style on the piano. His music is just fun, and makes you want to have a drink in your hand.

Listen to Over and Over - Jason Isbell. I believe he is one of the best songwriters of this generation.

Made me Fall in Love with Music - Black Crowes - I remember getting the Shake Your Money Maker cassette and just listening to it over and over for a complete summer.

Changed my Life - Beastie Boys. I feel like I aged with the Beatie Boys. Paul Revere/Fight for your Right came out when I was in elementary school. Whatcha Whatcha Want in high school, and Intergalactic in college. Since then, I have gone back and discovered Pauls Boutique which might be my favorite album. They were a big part of my musical life from the age of 10 through now.

Surprised Me - ZZ Top. My initial impression was that they were just a cheesy rock band, with the beards, cars, and dirty song lyrics (Pearl Necklace, Legs, etc...). Once I really started listening though, I loved them.

Guilty Pleasure - Others have mentioned her, but I will say Taylor Swift as well. I turn up Blank Space every time it comes on. Guilty as charged.

Should Have Seen Live by Now - Meh...I'm not a large concert person. I don't go to stadium or large venue concerts. I love seeing bands in bars and clubs where it is loud and you can be up close. That being said, I have always wanted to see the Toadies and haven't yet.

Great Live Band - Soundgarden. I was lucky enough to catch them when I was in high school. Unbelievable show.

Favorite - Too hard to list just one, but I will go with The Band. That could change within a day though as I have 4 or 5 musicians/bands that I really love.

Good:
Guns n Roses, ZZ Top, Zeppelin, Stones, SRV, Milli Vanilli

Change life/first music:
Jimmy Rogers, Hank Williams

Bad:

Judging from everyone's responses, you could fill in most of the details on my answers.

I do like a lot of newer music, but thanks to the changing industry, the bands aren't as widely known:
Ol' 97s
Sheepdogs
Sturgill Simpson
Joe Bonamassa
Nathaniel Rateliff
