Anybody seen this?

Gives the space exploration mission a heavy drama and character focus. I think you're supposed to ignore the fantasy engineering and flashbacks where people look older than the present.

I actually really enjoyed it. Certainly pulls at the heart strings a couple times.

My wife really enjoyed it and shed some tears. The snippets I caught sucked me in. Good characters, well acted.

Definitely had its eye-roll moments, but what series nowadays doesn't? Overall, entertaining story and characters, minus maybe the daughter.

RE: Ending. I thought it would've been cool to have the Mars landing transmission fail, thus leading everyone on Earth to believe the five astronauts died. How would the characters' families moved on?

That's EXACTLY how I thought it was about to play out. My brain was going a million miles an hour trying to think of all the storylines that would be created for season 2. Then.. it played out where they were successful and transmitted successfully, and while there are still good storylines, I just think they missed a HUGE chance at multiple storylines and potential payoffs, though the current ending almost had me stand up and clap

I'm four episodes in and loving it. The only thing that bugs me is the instant communication.

They address this later in the series, once they are farther away

Why couldn't they take the water bags over to the spigot? If that wasn't so close to the end, they'd have lost me.

Hollywood writers who have no idea what it's like outside of their bubble.

Man, that one lost me too... That whole sequence (mission control to the ship) was almost too much for me.

I'm nearly throught. The instant communication, spacious ship, Christmas decorations, and everyone hanging out with family the day before launch really bugged me.

Episode 1-2 spoilers
Also, the leak and fire situation was unbelievable. They train like crazy for things like that. Every conceivable emergency that could get out of control before they could get instructions from Earth is drilled until it's second nature. No way that leak happens and only one person knows what to do.

It's not a bad show overall, and all the inaccuracies and liberties at least make sense from a TV perspective

Watching episode 1 now. They have checked most of the Hollywood boxes, but are slipping.

Female lead in male dominated career (test pilot/astronaut)- check

Asian (female; two fur)- check

Middle eastern- check

Black dude- check

Fail for no Hispanic or gay (unless they show Russian dude is gay in some later episode)

Fail for no interracial marriage ( unless I haven't seen it yet, only 30 min in).

Towards end of episode 1. Looks like we may have a gay. Thank you Hollywood for not letting me down.

Hispanic dude in mission control. Just need an interracial marriage/relationship to close things out.

Had some high(er) hopes for this. Almost too predictable and the pending death each episode is exhausting. Also as mentioned by others, the instant comms to cell phones was a little too much.

Asian chick is gay, maybe bi. Black guy's adopted parents were Jewish mom, black dad.

I am through five episodes, debating whether to hang on.

Beyond the stuff already mentioned, it's a show about going to Mars, and they are focusing on just about everything but the technical challenges needed to pull that off. It's "oh my daughter isn't happy", ""oh my daughter hates me", "my husband is paralyzed", "I can't talk to my gay (future) lover" , "I killed my brother" etc.
I get the idea of focusing on the emotional struggles of it all, it just feels like a glorified network drama set in space. The show could have Ben so much more imo.

I guess I don't have the same dislike so many of y'all have. I enjoyed it quite a lot. Oragator hit the nail on the head though about the style of the show. Its not a space or sci fi show but more of a drama that happens to be set in space. Maybe that's turning people off? I don't know. Its lack of technical accuracy hasn't really bothered me either.

EDIT: Misha saying "winky face emoji" over and over was hilarious

I have the same beef with it. Buts that because I love sci fi and anything space and want this to be a space travel epic. But you have to look at the name. Away. The show is meant to be a drama about being separated from everything you know.

Just finished the series with the wife...yes they do check many of the most have boxes that Hollywood pushes. Daughter irritated the hell out of me and the constant texting after they got out of range for video got old. Aside from that, it was an OK watch.

Texas stuff was just horrible....the brisket scene with the dad covering the thing with BBQ sauce and corriander, The tall fir trees in the background..the only shot I saw that was really in Houston was the Hospital at Memorial City.

I just finished watching the whole series yesterday and today. I really loved this. One of the best things I've seen in a while. And I too got a little teary at the end. Hope they are setting up for a season two.

Of course I'm a huge space geek too so anything that has to do with that always thrills me but I thought this was well done.

Yes it had a few of the regular spots Hollywood fills these days, but I thought all the actors did a wonderful job. Saw a few of the plot sequences though way before they got there pretty obvious in most cases, but still good. The daughter bothered me too with her selfishness, but what teenager doesn't at times.

yep, it was filmed in Vancouver. some how they made it all of the way to Mars during the 2 weeks of January that it is chilly in Houston.

Finally finished it.

Matt reminded me of those shows where police chiefs go out and solve crimes, thousands of engineers at nasa, including teams for each system, but ole Matt always had the answer!

I won't go through a whole list, but so much of the last few episodes felt contrived - like a love discussion during the checklist for the most important landing in human history?

Wasn't awful, just felt really lazy sometimes.

There were a lot of things that really bothered me about it. Phones were #1. Water into the bags was #2. That made no sense. All the contrived crap between the characters got to be a little much. It felt like they picked the people with the most baggage they could possibly find for possibly the most stressful thing any human will ever go through.

Oh, and Hillary Swank. There's just something about her I don't like. Especially in this.

Granted, I only watched the first episode, and yes, it stood out to me. But do you really want it to be realistic where every time the daughter wants to say something to her mom, they show her driving to NASA, entering mission control, getting clearance from coms to communicate, getting authorization, being patched in, and having the awkward delay? I get that it is not realistic, but what would be the alternative for this show?

Realism...? It would be cool to be in your bed, chomping on some Cheetos and just tapping on your iPad to contact some spaceship well past the moon like it's next door. I suppose they could not have done the 30+ tearey scenes they did without this, though.
