I'm excited to know what the outrage is.

Netflix literally has everything. So what was it?

I am guessing this is about "cuties"

Probably the movie Cuties. More specifically the dance scene with the 11yo girls. Politics board posted a tweet with a clip. NSFW.

Yeah its pretty bad. How someone even gave the green light for that scene is bad.

Offering an olive branch to F16 on this one. In 100% agreement that what I've seen of the clips is pretty f/cked up. The situation is a little more nuanced than presented, of course, but that's still no excuse. Basically, this...

Soon, people will be sitting in empty homes, naked and living off of saltine crackers and water after all the boycotts.

The movie was made in France, by a French director.
This should be like hitting a softball for those who are upset, it's France you get to bash.

And for the record having seen the scene in question (and apparently there are others), it's wholly inappropriate.

My dad sent a mass text to friends and family today, re: the start of the NFL...

"If you take a knee, it's a game I won't see."

I told him have fun never watching sports again. You live life boycotting every last thing you disagree with, and, just like you said, you're going to end up naked and alone and living off saltine crackers (though I'm sure even Nabisco will eventually manage to piss some people off).

It's why I've never boycotted a single company. I can disagree without sealing myself off in a bubble of agreement. Granted, I *do* think certain companies are obviously worth sending a message to, and again, this whole Cuties thing is objectively abhorrent. But that doesn't mean I'm going to stop watching all of Netflix, and "punish" the thousands of other people at and who have worked for Netflix because of a single bad decision.

If you cancel netflix, where are you going to get your fix of documentaries that take 8-10 hours to tell a 2 hour story?

My entire plan for teaching my kids the importance of safe sex and the dangers of drugs is to make them watch Kids, Basketball Diaries, and Trainspotting

So here is my thing with Netflix and why the wife and I still remain customers.

First, it's cheap as hell like most streaming services (ok that was shallow but still true).

Second, it just keeps putting out **** we want to watch. We just finished S1 of Cobra Kai and we are so absolutely hooked on this hot mess pile of awesomeness I don't know what to say.

Third, Netflix does in fact provide a platform for very diverse programming. My younger brother is a pastor and last summer we got stuck at night on the annual family get together watching all kinds of really lame Christian based young adult programming because that is what he approves for his family. Yes, Netflix does in fact provide a platform for that too.

Isn't that what we conservatives say we want? Not special treatment but equal footing in the entertainment media arena? I could be wrong but I think Netflix provides that.

Excellent point. Another reason why boycotting is completely nonsensical in this instance.

And yeah, I rotate through just about every major streamer, turning certain subscriptions off if there's nothing I'm watching that particular month. But Netflix is the one I constantly keep and have never turned off. Even if there's nothing new that I'm active watching, there's *always* something in their catalogue I can throw on while I eat or clean or whatever. It's just an endless well of any content you can imagine.

I watched it, it's not as bad as some people are making it out to be. But it's still bad. I don't think it's much worse than Toddlers and Tiaras or Dance Moms (although I've never seen an episode of either of those, I feel like I get the jist of them). So I don't think Cuties was a new breed of inappropriate, it was just another title on a growing stack of inappropriate content.

It was just a crappy movie too.

Most of the audience is booing/disturbed by the dance scene.
It is clear they don't approve and that is the point of the movie.
Kids should stay kids and not be hyper sexualized when most of them haven't had their periods yet

I'm 100% on board with the message the film is trying to send. I do think they could have made the same points without going where they did with their young actresses.

That politics thread is a dumpster fire, go figure.

I watched the clip and it's vile. But honestly not that much worse than some of the videos I've seen from kids' dance and cheerleading competitions.

Does it bother me that there are parents out there who let their daughters dress and dance like that? Yeah, I certainly don't love it. But the solution for our family is to not socialize with those people and not allow our kids (or ourselves, for that matter) to watch content like Cuties. I won't boycott Netflix over this, and we'd already removed it from the playroom tv after that 365 Days movie.

Those who aren't aware...Here's what sickly producers and Netflix believe is appropriate for 11 year old girls in the movie Cutie. Disgusting utilization of judgement by all involved.

  • an 11 year old girl take a photo of her V and posts it online
  • the five 11 year old girls in the movie take a turn at webcam porn
  • an 11 year old girl tries to take a photo of a boys ***** at school
  • and 11 year old girl play with a condom

This is way out of bounds by the company, and whomever produced the content. I don't care what country they live in. The movie basically appears to be made by a sickly pedophile. They can twist the "intent" all they want. And Netflix's promotes it as "ok" "normal". Sickening really.

I have somehow avoided all of these films except for Trainspotting. I never had any desire to see the rest of them because I simply don't like to play in that dark of a sandbox.

So far no one on this thread has said that the scene was ok.
It's like you are trying to get people to be more mad than they are, everyone already disapproves. It's just a question of degrees.

I saw a quote that basically said that filming the child actors dancing like that to show how inappropriate it is was akin to actually murdering somebody to show how bad murdering someone was.

Little extreme, but I get the idea.
