I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread about this already...

The wife and I have been considering dumping Netflix already because we find ourselves watching a lot more of the other streaming platforms (Prime and Hulu mainly). Netflix has been adamant that their original content will grow their product, but for us personally we have not been impressed.

Now that apparently this Cuties controversy seems to be the hill that Netflix wants to die on we are pulling the plug.

I thought everyone canceled after Netflix aired the indie micro-budget Brazilian comedy where Jesus was gay. Is this like boycotting watching the NFL, which you can do unlimited times for message board purposes?

But yeah, go ahead and show those Netflix executives who's boss. I'm sure the thousands of other people who work for Netflix, who had absolutely nothing to do with this - especially those who contribute to and produce content for Netflix's Christian library, one of the most robust Christian libraries of any streamer - will appreciate your efforts.

I swear, the left has co-opted Cancel Culture, while the right has co-opted Boycott Culture. Both can be, and often are, equally ridiculous, especially in this instance. For the record, I find the Cuties footage to be abhorrent, but boycotts like this make little sense, and serve no purpose other than to virtue signal on social media and message boards like this.

I'm sorry I missed the thread titled "Netflix" (don't know how I missed it) to address this issue. And I'm sorry if you think it is "virtue signaling" to be horrified by watching 11 year old girls literally bend over and grab their crotch, but that is something that I am comfortable taking a stand against. Boycotts like this make perfect sense to me.

Hulu is awful
prime is ok
Dont click on a movie if you dont want to watch it

I think its dusgustimg that a show can openly promote hate and disgust. Why does queer eye hate for grown men to wear Jerseys?

I like when people say how horrible a show is and how they would never wa t ch one second of it but then they post clips of it and describe them. Seriously just don't watch it.

I thought the big bang theory was offensive but I never demanded CBS be taken off the air.

How is this the "hill Netflix wants to die on"???? Because they don't give into pressure to remove something from a bunch of screamers who probably don't know what they are talking about, bc they haven't actually seen it?

Just don't watch that show. WTF?

People are trashing others for not allowing them to express their right of free speech and then turn around and trash a platform that lets people do just that. Seriously, WTF is wrong with everyone?

Personally, I think that show it probably trash so, shockingly enough, I'm not going to watch it.

I am sure OP is going to take the 12 bucks he was spending on Netflix and donate it to some child trafficking prevention charity or something. Oh wait, he just wants a message board full of internet strangers to know that he is a righteous person because he is going to cancel Netflix.

It is not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it has a real message.

The problem is did it film things that disgust normal people, in an effort to get the message across.

I don't know if this movie should have been made with many of these reasons

But it has a real message about what modern society is like for young girls.

It is a depressing ****ing movie.

Its strange to me that there was never any real outrage towards TLC or the other TV networks airing all of the shows with 5 and 10yr old beauty pageant girls.

Started to post this, but decided it wasn't worth weighing in on. From what I saw of the clips related to this (I've seen all of 30 seconds), it's not much worse than Toddler's and Tiaras and Dance Mom's or whatever they called it on The Learning Channel. I think they're all bad, so when I say not much worse what I mean is they're all really gross.

Also, don't see anything wrong with boycotting or telling people you're boycotting. That's how that form of vocalizing your disgust works. For anyone that says you don't have to watch, you're just as capable of ignoring their calls for a boycott. Had no problem ignoring calls for boycotts when the Obamas got their deal.

I dont even mean in relation to this movie - I can see why the movie would upset a large group of people and cause some to boycott.
I dont understand why the child pageant shows are not criticized similarly.
For me, the jonbenet ramsey case was the first time I realized "oh crap, these 6 yr olds are being made up, dressed up and taught to dance like adult women. This is really creepy."

Umm because it is a huge story right now and I agree with the people who don't want to fund that garbage.
TCTTS

So, on the other side of that coin, how do you then justify defunding all the amazing, non-"garbage" content from all the good people who work at Netflix, including their massive library of "wholesome" content, of which is a vast, Christian library Netflix produces? Cuties is like... 00001% of their total content, signed off on by only a small handful of execs. Are you hoping to stick it to their janitorial staff as well, along with the thousands of other people who work there and had absolutely nothing to do with this?

Why does he owe those people anything? Yes it's collateral damage but at the end of the day people make decisions on how they spend their money on any number of subjects and it pretty much always has adverse unintended consequences for someone else. Do you think about every single person that could be negatively impacted when you decide to stop or alter your spending habits?
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
I'm not saying he owes anyone anything. I'm using his own logic to try and understand his justification. He said he doesn't want to "fund garbage," but in this instance, by doing so, according to his own logic, he wouldn't be funding all kinds of people and content that support the things he likely stands for as well. Which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, so I'm just trying to understand the justification.

Overall, I absolutely get wanting to send a message to those in charge, and don't disagree with doing so. I'm simply growing more and more tired and wary of this culture where ANYTHING we even remotely disagree with is now "canceled" or "boycotted" whole cloth. The right gives the left sh*t for cancel culture, and the left gives the right sh*t for their myriad boycotts, when they both can be equally extreme, nonsensical, and counterproductive in the long run. It's just more hate and division and virtual signaling on both sides, and I don't know where it ends.
Fenrir
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It would be helpful if people just accepted that other people spend their money how they want and don't take it personally. That goes for everyone. Don't get upset if people continue to spend where you don't and vice versa. Very few people that make decisions based on morality can have those decisions stand up to extreme scrutiny.

Obviously some people feel that the line that was crossed for them on this issue is worth whatever collateral damage may happen from other entertainers losing out on viewers.

So you agree that people can voice their opinions by choosing to not spend money on a company that doesn't align with their values, but you don't agree with my opinion in this particular case because Netflix only has a small amount of child exploitation movies in their library?

I said "send a message." I didn't say "choose to not spend money."

I simply will never understand boycotting ALL of something when only .00001% of its decision making could be considered "wrong" or "questionable." I feel the same way toward the left for boycotting things like Chick-fil-A for their COO opposing same-sex marriage. I'm all for same-sex marriage, and I think it's ridiculous that anyone would want to keep two consenting adults, no matter their gender, from marrying, but I don't see what sense it makes to boycott the entire brand, and thus everyone else who works there, for the views/actions of a portion of the top brass.

I'm well aware of what they are saying the movie is intended to do, but there are videos on the internet now of basically just the 2 minute dance routine that is probably being viewed very heavily in the pedo community.

My two cents:

There's movies out there with incredibly disturbing, violent imagery. This particular scene is obviously meant to be disturbing as well, and from my understanding, the movie itself is actually a criticism of this kind of thing.

So why such a huge oproar over this? If you're disturbed by the scene, it seems to me the movie did its job.

Is the issue about "giving pedos jerkoff material?" Because I'm sorry to tell you guys, but as someone who frequented 4chan quite a bit in my college years, I can tell you that sadly, pedos have plently of material and this is not going to make them bat an eye.

I dunno, it just seems like you are meant to be disturbed by the scene and perhaps if you're that upset, maybe watch the movie to see it its full context rather than calling for a boycott and starting a thread to show everyone how mad you are.
