The show itself is pretty fun in its entirety and worth the watch but episode 5 is a standalone episode that has almost nothing to do with the rest of the show. It's an impressive use of 30 minutes telling the story of some aspiring video game creaters and a long term look at a relationship and a business. Jake johnson is one of the leads and is incredible. You could watch it alone and have no context from the show and be just fine. It's one of the more impressive single episodes I've seen in a while. It's been out for a while so this may have been discussed before but I just stumble upon it. It's on Apple+

I just watched this episode, and wow what a little treasure.

I had just binged three episodes of Mythic Quest yesterday, then started another mini binge today, and this episode just came in out of nowhere. The show itself has been good and fun, with nice laughs and good to great characters. But this had not much to do with it, yet felt so weirdly welcomed... so satisfying. The writing was tight, the directing was hypnotic and almost lyrical, and the acting was top notch where you're aware your watching great acting yet aren't getting pulled out of the immersion. When they start laughing towards the end of their meet cute it really struck me that I was watching something elevated.

I was shocked to see it was directed by Rob Mcelehenny (Mac from Sunny).

It said it was written by Katie Mcelehenny - is that a Kaitlin Olsen pseudonym?

I watched this series a few weeks ago and was blown away by this episode. It really is fantastic. I tried to get some friends to watch it but so far no luck... Hopefully it'll start to get some viral traction as I don't know anyone else who has seen it.

As for Mythic Quest I'd say it's aight. Fun and easy show but overall pretty mediocre. Which only seems like a disappointment because it feels like it should be such a home run. Hopefully it only gets better. The Australian girl is so annoying.

I thought so too but looked it up, and it's his sister

Random bump but I just started this series and got to that episode and what a freaking gut punch.

Out of nowhere, but I agree with the above that it's a fantastically done one-off that will stick with me a while.

Overall, I like the show and it has some chuckles but it's nothing I'm amazed at.

It really is great. I still think about it every couple of weeks.

I think placing it in the middle of the season served to heighten its impact by contrasting it so clearly with the show, but also in a way improving the prime storyline (by giving it this deeper mythology) which in turn then improves this bottle episode.

Also, Cristin Milioti is a genuine star.

she really is.

my wife went to NYC with some friends and got to see her in the premier of once in its first run in 2013, and she came away saying that Milioti would be one of the bigger stars in the future. she's been selective on her roles, but i thought she was far and away the best thing about Palm Springs (other than Roy)

ETA: Palm Springs was absolutely the best comedy last year and Borat winning that award will make sure i never take another award show seriously again. and i liked Borat 2.

So I'd been putting off this show because I work in games and was afraid I'd just want to pick things apart, but this thread talking about this episode made me finally decide to sit down and watch.

Wow, what an episode. The show as a whole is decent, but this was just a gut punch. The entire juxtaposition of their relationship, the rise and fall of the game's IP, and the whole concept of sacrificing the vision for the success was just expertly done. And of course, both actors were just fantastic. Really glad I took the time for this one.

Just finished this episode. I'm super impressed by how impactful that episode was since they introduced entirely new characters and went thru a multi-year story in 35 minutes. The only "bad" thing was how incredibly sad it was (which is what they were going for of course).

Liking the show overall so far. I really hope they connect episode 5 back into the series somehow, but I'm assuming they won't. Glad season 2 is dropping soon.

I've been putting it off because I'm afraid of how close to reality it might be.

Much closer than Grandma's Boy, but definitely simplifies a lot of aspects for the story and definitiely leans into the absurd.

i just finished the first season (with the 2 bonus episodes) and i have to say it's pleasantly surprising. glad i got into it right as the second season was coming.

a lot of shows did the zoom thing for COVID and that was the only one i found legitimately funny and touching.

and i know that i'm probably outing myself, but I legitimately love Jo's character. I know she's supposed to be the evil conservative girl from the midwest, but it's played well by her in a way that i can laugh at as a conservative.

All the characters are great, IMO (except for probably the two testers, but they come off endearing enough to cover for it).

Agreed about it being the only good "Zoom" episode I've seen.

This episode should win an award. Rob and Charlie should be commended for painting outside the lines of the MQ storytelling and doing this.
Did anyone else get a "Black Mirror" type vibe of the story, minus the future tech ruining the emotional aspect of the plot?

This week's episode was another flashback, standalone episode and once again it was absolutely fantastic. This one instead told the "backstory" of C.W.

Really great and poignant stuff

These one-off/backstory episodes keep knocking it out of the park. The moment AE confronted CW about his "story" was great.

Mac is quickly building himself a stellar TV director resume. Wouldn't be surprised if we see him start picking up jobs directing episodes of other prestige shows.

Love the small thread of flipping who goes by initials at the beginning versus the end of the ep.

Bump. Finally started watching MQ and got to the "Dark Quiet Death" episode a couple of days ago. Beautiful yet tragic storytelling.

Another bump. Like those ahead of me, I started watching and felt kind of compelled to find out what the board thought after this episode. Just an awesome little piece of television. Well acted, directed, and incredibly well-written. I'm certain they are setting up something, for the MQ team with it, but I really don't care if they do. I'm just glad to have seen it.

I think it was probably the most human one. I remember having some of those moments where it was like oh **** I just really need a hug... and I wasn't even nearly as isolated as some people.

I loved the show. I hope they end up building another season, even though it seems unlikely.

Renewed for seasons 3 and 4 already. This is pretty funny:

Wasn't quite as good as A Quiet Dark Death imo, but still really well done. Really interested to see if they continue this with future seasons as well.

One thing they haven't touched on that I'd love to see is the layoff cycle that many game companies go through. It could certainly fit a 1-2 episode arc like this thematically without having to figure out ways to break up the existing cast.

I got a new iPad, and the free Apple TV sub. I knew Ted Lasso was supposed to good (and it is), but this show was such a pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed it a lot, and I really wish the word on this show gets out more. One of the better new comedies out there.

Getting caught up on season 3. Once again, the standalone episode is so freaking great. Really beautiful episode.

Just picked this show up on the recommendation of a friend and could've written this myself.

Best "standalone" TV episode outside of the Last of Us's "Long, Long Time" I've seen quite a while.

What an unexpected welcome relief this show has been to push my through to football season.

I've already chimed in once on this thread, but since it got bumped, just thought I'd again say I really like this show. I think it's a ton of fun.
