If you have 12 free minutes, check this whole thing out.
If you don't have 12 free minutes, skip to 8:14 to hear an EVH style solo for Stairway to Heaven.

That's great stuff. I liked all three different solo styles conceptualized.

Rick Beato has outstanding content. Love listening to that guy talk about music.

Two thoughts. 1. That was an amazing concept. 2. Why am I not a better guitarist?!

Fine, as long as he doesn't do it in Guitar Center.

Weird that he posted that 2 or 3 days before Eddie died. The guy doing the Eddie solo is legit.

Also the concept of the video is very cool. Basically shows how great guitarists all have such a unique and identifiable sound. I'm sure that applies to all of us wannabe rock stars, just not as extreme.

Agreed. At the end of the video he asks for requests for other ideas like this.

I can't wait to see if he does any more like this.

I bet it was hard for those guys not to just revert to playing the Led Zeppelin version.

Also, I found listening to the solo section without the solo section to be a really weird experience.

Agree. I'm not a Massive Zep fan but it's strange still hearing every note of the solo in your head even though it isn't being played with the drums and rhythm guitars.

Such a neat concept.

One thing that stood out form the Eric Johnson solo was that he and Johnny Marr, though from two different worlds, have a lot of similarities in their notes and styling.
One of my fav EJ interviews. He's a private person, so getting him to open up this much was pretty neat. Love how he refers to other musicians as "Cats". BTW, I'm not sure if it is still available, but the Electromagnets album he played on back in the 70's is great. I got a copy when it was reissued about 20 or so years ago.

As best I can tell for normal folks it's a lot like athletes. They have more talent, but they also do virtually nothing else with their time but work on being better at their craft. I saw an interview with Mark Tremonti's tech (think what you may about Creed but that dude is a badass guitarist) and when asked about his practice schedule he said he's playing guitar and working on new things between 6-8 hours every day. It's just insane the time commitment the great players make.

Yeah, these guys live to play guitar. I remember reading an interview with Steve Vai where he said he practices for 10 or more hours every day.

Cool video. I think I liked Beato's solo best

I mean... none of those solos were my preferred guitar styles. Good playing but too many notes. Rick's was the best for me. Been subscribed to Rick's channel for a while and he always has great content.

Would have loved to see a version for the great one, David Gilmour.

One of the biggest problems with something like this idea is playing within the context of the song. One of the things that makes guys like Page, Gilmour, and May so great is they never overdo it and play within the song. The problem is the entire song is a certain style. Overlaying a different style over top of it just doesn't sound like it fits.

I get your point, but this is a no harm, fun, exercise and thought experiment. No one is saying these other solos are better...it's just a cool thing to think about.

Also, for people with more of a jazz Or blues background, you realize solos change with every performance. Everyone knows the big guitar solos recorded in studio note for note, but those aren't always what gets played later on.

Watched this, then watched his Greatest Solos of all Time" episode. He was pretty right on (I love Steely Dan) though still puzzled how he picked Comfortably Numb instead of the actual #1, Time, in the top slot.

Time and Comfortably number are my top two Floyd songs, but I have to go with Comfortably numb for best solo. It is an absolutely perfect combination of notes.

That's the hard part. Very different solos and over different progressions. The first over the major progression with the second one using Bm as the I chord. Though I love them both, I have to say the first one is just too perfect.

I also think the first one helps make the second one even better.

Yeah, the first one flows a bit better. I read somewhere that he used a Big Muff Pi pedal for that. I have one of those stashed away somewhere - think I'll dig it out later today.

I was doing the same waiting for my wife to get ready for our date. I could sense her frustration when she was ready, and I was still sitting on the bed watching this guy's YouTube channel... I sheepishly put my phone down and got dressed.

I should have known by the tone, but I am still shocked that the stairway solo was done on a tele and not a les paul. Now I learn that the other guitar part was a 12 string fender. Gibson can suck it....says the owner of 11 strats, and one tele.

One of those fun facts about Zeppelin.

Have to say... my tele is my #1, but my 330's are up there.

I have a Strat, Tele, and Les Paul. I normally wouldn't question anyone for having 11 of any of those guitars, but........ I gotta ask- Why 11 Strats?
Lathspell

Yeah... 11 strats seems like overkill. I would never play through all of those in a year. Hell, I have 2 Les Pauls and haven't picked up my Classic in months.

I played guitar (poorly) as a kid. Lost the time for it like everything else. I find myself wanting to go back and play and really learn how, but I have no idea how to start. I can still play all the chords, etc, but when I try and pick it up, my hands just always fall into the same songs I've always played since I first picked it up at 15 or whatever.

Has anyone had any success with an online/youtube lesson series, or really anything self-taught? I'd love to claim I'd go take private lessons, but I just don't have the time.

Watching Rick Beato makes me miss it, though.

I bought one and had it tricked out with EMGs to get a better David Gilmour tone, not realizing it was me and not the guitar. I just kept replacing parts because it was turning into a bit of a hobby and just kept buying pieces and bits. Eight of the guitars are Frankenstrats and 3 are stock. All kinds of pickups, woods, configurations, tones and colors. They are mostly art work now, although 3 have been built for my young granddaughters to be given when they are older. All are US manufactured to keep quality up. I found a place that buys stock guitars and sells them for parts, not like Warmoth but genuine parts. They are much bigger now and have better variety although I think COVID has impacted their stock some recently.

stratosphereparts.com

I recently had the joy of giving two guitars away to persons that I know they will be used. One to a indi/religious music performer (she is a terrific singer) and one to a friend who kept talking about getting an electric guitar. Funny, the professional musician selected a Mexican (the only one I had) made Deluxe Nashville tele that I swapped in for a better neck. THe pick-ups are USA, just the body was MIM. It sounds pretty decent and blue is her favorite color. I see her on Youtube every now and then and see the guitar. My friend selected a rare mahogany p90 stratosonic. It is a Gibson scale length and is Fender's version of an SG I suppose. I finally found the proper neck for the thing (the original I believe) and when I put it together in final form for her, it was the sweetest sounding and playing guitar I had. It is all stock now and she is really loving it.

People have hobbies they need to stop spending money on. Assembling Fender Stats was/is mine.

I will give more away someday. That was a lot more fun than I anticipated.

I recommend that to everybody, just give your stuff away after awhile.

I had a 1999 Bonfire stickered A&M football helmet that I bought at the end of the season when they were sold and I eventually gave it to the wife of a former player from that year after someone took her husbands helmet. I still smile about that. It was collecting dust and she definitely needed it more than I. My guitars can be used someday by somebody I am certain.

I have 14 or 15 guitars, and I've played every single one within the last year. I use 3 fairly regularly in a band, and another 2 for band rehearsal. I throw my Steinberger or another headless guitar in the trunk on practice days. I don't have to worry about having an expensive guitar in the trunk, and less chance of popping the singer in the head in our small rehearsal space.

It would be good to pass those instruments to the right people someday. The problem is that of the 5 guitars I've ever sold, I miss them terribly. I want to go back in time and play them one more time. I'm only this way about guitars. Never really missed a bike or TV or PA system, etc that I've sold.

I could never give away any of my guitars except to my kids, after I die.

I only have the one strat, a '17 American Prof that I put some Duncan Antiquity II's in. I bought it a year after selling my '11 American Standard. I didn't realize how much I would miss my strat and had to get another one.

I hate to admit it, but none of my Gibsons feel as good to play as my Tele and Strat. Just love the neck shapes and tall frets.

I will say, I do not like high output pickups and tend to replace stock pickups with Duncan antiquities. Did that to my lester and my strat. My two 330's came stock with the MHS P-90s (one with plastic covers and one with nickel covers), which I think are absolutely amazing. The tele has the hand wound, reliced custom shop '63 pickups in the bridge and neck.

I just love the sound of an Alnico II magnet that is slightly degaussed. So warm and articulate. They also clean up so nicely when I roll back the volume on the guitar.

My next purchase will either be an ES-335 or a custom shop Strat. I just really want a strat with a nitro finish.

I agree to not get hot single coils. You can lose so much tone with hot coils.

Fender is reacting to issues with wood these days. They ran the Elite version for a couple of years with ebony fret boards because of supply and regulation issues with rosewood. Now everything is rosewood although much of it is a lighter color wood. Even the ebony they used had lots of "striping". The new Ultra's seem pretty good, but I believe they have noiseless pups which really are a stack humbler. The Professional II may have the V mods which are true single coils.

There are many after market pups which are great and I can never decide.

The strat just feels comfortable to play, I never like the Les Paul I had in terms of comfort, and even the Parker (original) and Ibanez (Satriani- my first guitar) don't feel or place as nice. My Parker Nightfly sounds great but it just feels "stiff" as I just could never make it work.

There are lots of good Youtube channels out there that review guitars which I watch when bored. Darrel Braun Guitar is good at reviewing brand names and off-brand names. The best I have heard is Paoletti out of Italy which makes a strat like guitar and sounds so good. Kind of pricey. I would trade two Fenders for one, but it may take 4.

I love the Anderton's channel. Great samples of so much gear and love their blindfold challenges, especially when they pick the cheap guitar. You know they are being honest.
