If you have 12 free minutes, check this whole thing out.
If you don't have 12 free minutes, skip to 8:14 to hear an EVH style solo for Stairway to Heaven.
That's great stuff. I liked all three different solo styles conceptualized.CrottyKid said:

Weird that he posted that 2 or 3 days before Eddie died. The guy doing the Eddie solo is legit.
Also the concept of the video is very cool. Basically shows how great guitarists all have such a unique and identifiable sound. I'm sure that applies to all of us wannabe rock stars, just not as extreme.
One of my fav EJ interviews. He's a private person, so getting him to open up this much was pretty neat. Love how he refers to other musicians as "Cats". BTW, I'm not sure if it is still available, but the Electromagnets album he played on back in the 70's is great. I got a copy when it was reissued about 20 or so years ago.C@LAg said:
Such a neat concept.
One thing that stood out form the Eric Johnson solo was that he and Johnny Marr, though from two different worlds, have a lot of similarities in their notes and styling.

Two thoughts. 1. That was an amazing concept. 2. Why am I not a better guitarist?!
Watched this, then watched his Greatest Solos of all Time" episode. He was pretty right on (I love Steely Dan) though still puzzled how he picked Comfortably Numb instead of the actual #1, Time, in the top slot.DallasTeleAg said:
I mean... none of those solos were my preferred guitar styles. Good playing but too many notes. Rick's was the best for me. Been subscribed to Rick's channel for a while and he always has great content.
Would have loved to see a version for the great one, David Gilmour.
One of the biggest problems with something like this idea is playing within the context of the song. One of the things that makes guys like Page, Gilmour, and May so great is they never overdo it and play within the song. The problem is the entire song is a certain style. Overlaying a different style over top of it just doesn't sound like it fits.

Time and Comfortably number are my top two Floyd songs, but I have to go with Comfortably numb for best solo. It is an absolutely perfect combination of notes.
That's the hard part. Very different solos and over different progressions. The first over the major progression with the second one using Bm as the I chord. Though I love them both, I have to say the first one is just too perfect.gggmann said:DallasTeleAg said:

Which one? There are two.

Fine, as long as he doesn't do it in Guitar Center.
Yeah, the first one flows a bit better. I read somewhere that he used a Big Muff Pi pedal for that. I have one of those stashed away somewhere - think I'll dig it out later today.DallasTeleAg said:That's the hard part. Very different solos and over different progressions. I also think the first one helps make the second one even better.

Well....I went down a two hour rabbit hole looking at that guy's you tube page last night.

I should have known by the tone, but I am still shocked that the stairway solo was done on a tele and not a les paul. Now I learn that the other guitar part was a 12 string fender. Gibson can suck it....says the owner of 11 strats, and one tele.

I recommend that to everybody, just give your stuff away after awhile.
