This show has never shied away from the fact that it's historical fiction. 99% of the conversations seen in the show are completely fabricated, but based on the history that we know. And events are moved around in order to fit into an episodic format.

This is not a documentary and never has been.

I made the mistake of googling Lord Mountbatten literally minutes before THAT scene and seeing the year he died. Still, definitely wasn't expecting that.

They're laying on the imagery pretty thick this season:

The Royal family all out hunting while Dickie was getting hunted.

Nabbing the trophy buck while Charles gets his trophy bride.

It's one thing to liven things up, to compress events and characters, or to make up stuff that attempts to explain the gaps in knowledge, it's another thing to intentionally deceive people.

The story of Michael Fa gan is known and it's completely different than how show presented. They clearly wanted to bash Thatcher so they pulled this out of their asses. Then, to add "authenticity" they show pictures of the real guy during the credits and present carefully chosen portions of the back story. Of course, they left out the bad stuff to further protect their desired narrative. Anybody not anal about looking up the truth (like me) would come away from that thinking that was true.

I googled the guy in the middle of the episode and read his Wiki bio.

I then continued the episode and enjoyed it for what it was.

"Based on actual events" or "Based on a true story" should be the slogans of MSM news programs.

"CNN - Based on actual events*"

"MSNBC - Based in a true story*"

*The people discussed on this show are real, but we omit anything and everything that can't be forced into our narrative.

Can we leave "MSM" talk on politics?

I finished the show and I have a hard time believing that Charles was THAT much of a doooshbag. I think they are leaving about a BIG part of the story. If any of you lived with somebody with an ED then you know it's like living with an alcoholic. Everybody tries to get them to stop, and they lie, do it secretly, and all of that. It is exhausting and infuriating. I have a hard time believing that it had as little impact on the marriage as they portrayed in the show.

Netflix puts it front and center when I first start it up.

If you are talking about TexAgs, then what do you think this thread is for?

I thought she came off okay. At first she seemed disinterested and couldn't climb the rock (likely due to bulimia), but by the end it was a "triumph".

I have no problem believing they were both as horrible as portrayed in the show. Just a terrible match from the start

Season 5 should be wild once they start having their war in public. Elizabeth Debicki as Diana apparently

I thought she was presented quite positively. Yeah she had an affair, but it was after Charles basically ignored her. Even her bulimia was presented as a personal demon that had no real impact on anybody else (which I find hard to believe). Charles was presented as a spoiled brat who only resented Diana because she was getting too much of the attention. That may be true, but I have a hard time believing it was as one sided as they made it out to be.

He was forced to marry her because he could not marry Camilla, the woman he loved.

He needed a virgin bride to give an heir and a spare

He totally resented her

But since he married Camilla, he comes across as genuinely happy right now

Being royal has major issues

Diana changed that royalty forever

Maybe you should stick to books instead of TV or cinema.

The episode about the cousins broke my heart. I looked it up and there was a documentary made about them in 2011. I can't believe one of them lived until 2014.

Even sadder was one died in 86 leaving the other to live till 2014. I cannot imagine her loneliness.

I liked the Queen scene of her calling out Charles as a big ole baby better!

i was drawn into this series by Claire Foy in S1&2
I often pause to google people or events
i like both Lady Di and Princess Anne, still not keen on the queen in S3&4
I thought they were going to address the bulimia somehow, not just show it
and Prince Charles is thoroughly petulant

I did feel like maybe Philip and Di would connect more better and probably should have

and now I have to wait for a S5??

The only thing I really remember of Princess Diana was her funeral so this season was particularly interesting.

I keep wondering what I'll think of this show (which I enjoy) when it finally catches up to an era that I'm familiar with.

I know it's not exactly historically accurate but I wish they had shown more of the events surrounding the Falkland's War.

All in all a great season.

What is the point of the British Monarchy? A 90+ year old queen that will hand over to a 70+ year old king that will eventually lead to William being king. There's no more scandals, save an American stealing an heir that doesn't matter and no one cares about. Philips words to Diana in the last episode made sense. But he was wrong too. What she did for any charity she touched was phenomenal. That's hard to replicate. IMO. But I'm old enough to remember watching their wedding, hearing Charles' "tampon" tapes and going to church the morning she died and no one wanted to be there. We all know how this ends. I look forward to the creative license taken in S5.

Out of curiosity, how old are you? I'm an 80s kid so she was always around. Still remember when NBC news broke into SNL saying she had been in a car accident.

Not shown in the show and for good reason He survived briefly after the ship explosion.... it blew off both legs. He survived long enough to be rescued minutes later and died on the way back to shore. Serving two world wars... he was one tough son of a *****
