Watching movies that have really cool/well established settings are some of my favorites. When they get the setting right, it can seem like a mini vacation. Sometimes it doesn't even matter if the actual movie is even any good.

I guess I should rephrase- it doesn't have to be a vacation type setting (although that's always welcome), but rather a setting so well done you feel like you are visiting the place.

Detroit - Detroit
Draft Day - Cleveland
5th Element - A super crowded NYC
Fargo - Fargo (generic Eastern ND)
Patriot Day - Boston and vicinity
50-50 - constantly cloudy Seattle

Yeah, that was a great travel movie with a little psychopathy mixed in. Almost made me wish I had been born ridiculously wealthy and able to go float around the Mediterranean to pass the time. But I wasn't as talented as Tom.

Well Tom wasn't ridiculously wealthy, so he had to be talented instead.

Planes Trains and Automobiles- New York City for a few minutes, then the Midwest. This really works because of the focus on local hotels, diners, and the unique road trip scenery.

Looking forward to a lot of great suggestions from this topic.

Another one I saw recently- Fisherman's Friend. Predictable and a bit cheesy, but light and uplifting. Best part was the Cornwall setting. It was like a mini vacation to Cornwall (or at least in my mind haha)

Lord of the Rings - Middle Earth New Zealand
The Way - Galicia region of Spain.or any sort pilgrimage or hiking trip where you get away from it all.

Nacho Libre - Mexico
Napoleon Dynamite - Smalltown, Idaho
ALONE - Arctic Circle

Against All Odds - half the movie is in the Yucatan
Stealing Beauty and A Good Year, both set in Italy and you just want to drink wine and eat prosciutto.

That movie is so good. The music and the scenery are wonderful. I wish more people knew about it and enjoyed it too.

Out of Africa - Kenya
Lawrence of Arabia - Middle East

The Hangover - Las Vegas

This was the first one that came to mind. It's an outstanding advertisement for Hawaii. It's worth watching just for the scenery/vibe. Oh, and also Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell in their absolute primes. Great movie.

the other Hawaii advert one is a mostly forgettable Adam Sandler movie Just Go With It

in fact the resort they were at Grand Wailea Maui is another Hilton property just like Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

to me they were as much adverts for those resorts as for hawaii

A good year was France.

I'm a sucker though for all Hawaii movies. The Big Bounce, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Descendents, 50 First Dates, Just Go With It, and a forgotten one - Honeymoon in Vegas. Half of those are crappy movies and didn't even care.

Dead Poets Society really sold New England
Rocky was Philly to its core
The Hangover is the perfect Vegas movie

One of my best friends has an older brother who was the stepfather of the person who wrote that movie. The stepfather character in the film was based on him, and before the movie was filmed Ben Stiller came out to Missouri City to interview him. I haven't ever seen the movie but my understanding is that most of the stepfather scenes were cut.
