Went to look if anything had been posted recently, couldn't find anything, but three new cast members were announced today, joining Paddy Considine, who is playing King Viserys Targaeryn.

Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower. She's the daughter of Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, and the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms. She was raised in the Red Keep, close to the king and his innermost circle; she possesses both a courtly grace and a keen political acumen.

Emma D'Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. The king's first-born child. She is of pure Valyrian blood, and she is a dragonrider. Many would say that Rhaenyra was born with everythingbut she was not born a man.

Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen. The younger brother of King Viserys and heir to the throne, Daemon is a peerless warrior and a dragonrider who possesses the true blood of the dragon. But it is said that whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air

I think they would have been better off not doing a direct prequel. There is thousands of years to play from in that universe, why go back to the same story that everyone knows already? The first fall of the white walkers and the construction of the wall would have been a way cooler story IMO.

Felt the same way, particularly when GRRM was talking a while back about what they were discussing as possible spinoffs. I was definitely rooting for the Long Night one.

The only way this could get me interested is if they don't go to Westeros for a while (like maybe until the last season), and spend the majority of the time in Essos. From all previous mentions, their conquering of Westeros was pretty much child's play to begin with.

This one is after the conquering, so it takes place in the early Targaryen years

Unfortunately, this appears to be based on the Targaryens and set in Westeros 200 years before GoT.

Ah, so I expect a lot of political intrigue and brothers hooking up with sisters. No magic other than dragons the size of dogs.

Throughout the run on HBO I would re-read the books once a year, and re-read the first three probably twice or three times each.

I'm not sure I've thought about the books or the show except in passing since the end of the last season.

I've been sitting on my Game of Thrones best moments tournament for like 4 months.

The ending and now 9 years of no Winds of Winter sure have sucked the life out of it for me.

Matt Smith does look like an inbred Targaryean. Throw a blonde wig on him and he's good to go.

Looking at the Targ wiki and their family tree it was tough to decipher when this show is as they all share about 6 names and everyone is related.

He should just give the books over to Brandon Sanderson and retire.

Look for Viserys I. This takes place about 100 years after Westeros was conquered by the Targs and about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

Unlikely I will watch, who cares when you know the ending is terrible. The ending sucked out my GoT love much like the new Star Wars trilogy murdered my Star Wars love brutally. At least the Mandalorian is a complete new set of characters that hopefully stays away from the Skywalker mess.

Find a new fantasy series to make, and by that I mean anything Sanderson or Dresden Files.

I still haven't seen the last episode of GOT after watching every other episode in the series multiple times, so gut reaction is to share your sentiments, but then there's a part of me that's like...well...maybe it'll be good.

Agree with the OP.... the last season really soured me on anything else.
Who here will read the "Winds of Winter" if & when it ever gets published?

FWIW the book the show is based on, Fire and Blood, is not bad reading. It's written like a history book, there's a ton of material this show will have to pull from. I enjoyed it, the show has a ton of potential with the right show runner.

This. In terms of TV, what I remember from summer 2019 was Chernobyl, not GOT. Talk about fumbling the bag.

I am gonna let you all give it a spin and then I will decide based on the consensus. I have a bad feeling it will suck.

I initially wanted to watch the series so I could actually know how it ends, in fear the book would never be finished. Now, I'll read it to see if it's any better.

I hate to be that guy but that chick is way too homely to play Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Jorah Mormont showed up in Disney+ Black Beauty as a moody loner with no family who has to try and guide a young woman whose lost her entire family to tragedy. Really stretching his chops!

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but is this in place of Blood Moon - the prequel that was supposed to be based on the Children of the Forest? Or are they doing both? I haven't payed attention to any GOT news in a while and just saw this thread.

Part of me wonders if the reason the Stormlight books have slowed down a little is because he's already doing some outlining with GRRM. Of course, it might also be because they are getting even more massive.

On one hand, being the guy who finished WoT and ASOIAF is a pretty cool achievement. On the other, he might not want to risk being thought of as a guy whose most popular work is based on other people's ideas. And he has plenty of his own to work on.

I love Sanderson. I think he'd be a terrible choice to finish ASOIAF. He's also mentioned that his goal is to finish what he has in mind for the Cosmere, and that he needs to basically focus on that to have any chance.
