This topic isn't discussed enough. The difference between the score in Boyz in the Hood and its closest comparison, Menace II Society, is night and day. An overused horn section can turn a street movie into an after school special pretty quickly.
I just rewatched the scene on youtube, haven't seen it in probably 15yrs. There's not much music at all. The little bit there does seem too "light" (it is what would be in a commercial for some random medicine now). It does feel like if that kind of scene/movie had come out in the last 10yrs it would be paired with loud cuts of multiple songs or one long single song.
