This topic isn't discussed enough. The difference between the score in Boyz in the Hood and its closest comparison, Menace II Society, is night and day. An overused horn section can turn a street movie into an after school special pretty quickly.

I just rewatched the scene on youtube, haven't seen it in probably 15yrs. There's not much music at all. The little bit there does seem too "light" (it is what would be in a commercial for some random medicine now).
It does feel like if that kind of scene/movie had come out in the last 10yrs it would be paired with loud cuts of multiple songs or one long single song.

Listening to Keith Sweat during a drive-by can help with caressing the trigger instead of violent jerking and missed shots.

Honestly thought this thread was going somewhere else

I for one applaud John Singleton for having the artistic vision to use one of Bleeding Gums Murphy's deep cuts in such a pivotal scene.
