I absolutely loved this movie.

I know they left us with the unanswered question of what he does with his life after the movie ended, but I think they missed out on a wonderful and poignant ending scene: twelve years from now, Joe meets an enthusiastic new student who he immediately recognizes as someone he knew from earlier........

But that sort of the begs the question "Why would you?"

Sure, you could change things up and film it in live action, but we can do that with basically anything now. Everything from How To Train Your Dragon to Frozen to Moana could be done with real people and CG, but it would lose so much of the appeal and humor.

To answer your original question btw, it's generally not cheaper/easier to shoot live as opposed to animating something at this quality level. A Pixar feature is 3-5 years in development vs being able to comfortably turn around a live action feature in 1-2 years. And Pixar develops their stories in house, so this was never intended for anything but animation.

As a kid of the 80's and 90's and as I get older I'm adapting the "back in my day" attitude. I guess it happens to all of us. I guess I'm getting tired of Animation, reboots, sequels and super hero movies. I really appreciate Souls original story and world they created. I was thinking this would have been a live action movie back in day. But I totally get why it is what it is in 2020.

But... "back in your day", there were just as many animated movies. We didn't have the tech for what Pixar is doing, but there were tons of drawn/cartoon movies. I'm with you on reboots and superhero movie overload, but I'm not sure I get your point with animation. Seems like the right percentage.

I'm sorry but no ****ing way there have been the same amount of animation films in the 80/90's as there has been in the last 10-15 yrs.
I could be wrong or maybe life stage now compared to then. But it seems we're inundated with animation films year after year.

I'm a kid of the 80s and 90s too and remember watching a crapton of animated movies as a youth. Not sure how you'd go about showing if the numbers have shifted, but it doesn't seem like they've changed to me.

Hadn't heard of it when it popped up and said let's try it. Knew nothing about it. And thought it was fantastic.

Watched it last weekend with the kid, maybe because we had to split it up and watch in two viewings it didn't stick with me. I need to watch it again to get the whole picture, and also since I noticed during the credits it was scored by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross I need to watch it again to take it all in and pay more attention to the music.

Coco is still my favorite Pixar film, I don't know if they'll ever make one that hits me as hard as that one. I can remember watching that one with my daughter the first time and getting emotional. Damn you Pixar and making me feel feelings.

Maybe the Dirty Sock wasn't the target audience for a Soul.

Do good movies get 5/5 mehs or 0/5 mehs though?

Watched it tonight with my 2.5 year old, and well she'll watch anything as long as the tv is on (which is why it's only on Fri/Sat/Sun nights).

I loved this movie! I can't think of a thing I didn't like and will probably be watching it 30 times. I didn't actually care for Inside Out the first time, but it's probably my favorite Pixar now (obviously having girls made it hit home).

We enjoyed it, but the amount of hype surrounding it (best picture?) built it up to an unattainable level that very few movies can live up to. UP is the gold standard in my opinion, and this felt one notch below that. Good, not great.

I just watched it last weekend and loved it. Perhaps my favorite scene in the whole movie was the jazz club tryout. I am a huge jazz piano fan and the solo piano portion absolutely blew me away. Jon Batiste music was incredible.

Wife and I just watched. Pretty good!

But I have a big question: when did Joe make mention of a live interest named "Lisa"?

I totally missed it but "22" mentioned her name to Joe later in the movie? I assumed "Lisa" was some girl he had a crush on and was expecting to see her at the end when he decided to live every minute....

Thought it was very middle of the road for Pixar. It was entertaining, but definitely not on the list of great Pixar movies.

Music was good, though. Love me some piano.

Watched this movie last week... and after I went to YouTube to get more info on the movie and Easter egg info like I do for most content....

This was like the 3rd hit just typing in Soul.... I can't believe people actually think like this, and it's just sad. Not once watching this movie did COLOR of skin ever cross my mind.

Summary of that video.

Everything is racist. Literally everything!

This triple Ivy league educated lawyer, teacher, activist and mother...makes the biggest complaint about true representation but in none of her videos defines what that is. If they're "normalized" (given a steady family, successful and educated they're not being truley represented. AND if an attempt is made to represent a character as their designated culture its a stereotype.

The only thing we both agree on is this movie is just meh and that The Princess and the Frog was a crap movie.

My point to her would be if you expect a movie to be made with black people in it that doesn't depict any struggle or sacrifice then you're expecting a thoroughly uninteresting film. There are probably some fair critiques of the film, but jeez.

I would love it if Pixar would make a movie based on the facts discussed in this great interview:

Jason Riley on "False Black Power"

Honestly, this "Soul" movie probably depicts a more accurate representation of the average Black family of the U.S. especially during the 1930's through the 1950's before Leftists started to convince them of their victimhood status and before Black leadership started focusing on political power instead of self determinism.

Appreciate his take on the movie and everything else.

Still though the movie was mediocre.

I do have to also say, Soul did show off some of the best animation I have seen.
